Default AC weirdness ... normal?

The AC on my 95 C4 is acting bizarre ... it is cooling fine, but in the cabin I'm hearing a sort of whirring sound every 15 or 20 seconds. I got out of the car and listened outside and noticed that the fan in the front of the car (condensor fan, presumably) is turning on and running for about 5 seconds, then shutting down. Then the car is making what sounds like a sucking in air sound for about 3 seconds, loudest by the windshield or under the front lid. The cycle repeats every 15-20 seconds. I have never noticed this before ... has anyone heard of anything like it? It was very warm and humid today in Boston, although it was also doing it this morning when it wasn't too bad out.

Thanks,

Vic

Its the dreaded a/c fan resistor ballast. Yours has gone bad.

I was afraid of that. What happens if it's not fixed right away? AC is cooling fine.

It'll probably cool better with the resistor replaced. Go for it! Lots of good info on www.p-car.com and the archives.

Vic,

I'm not discounting the resistor being bad, but it sounds like your HVAC servos are opening and closing at random as well. You may have a problem in the CCU circuit that is causing this and the A/C heat exchanger fan to cycle on and off. My indy shop has a Porsche analyzer that can diagnose CCU and HVAC faults. Not sure what the name of the analyzer is, but the dealer or a good indy should know. The coincidence of the A/C fan working intermittently and servos opening and closing would indicate a CCU logic problem, no?

Is it the servos? The sound I'm hearing has no effect on the air blowing into the cabin, which is cool enough to keep me cool in 93 degrees on a humid day with the fan on the 1 setting.
