I don't find using spider shims to be PITA - I spread pistons a little more, stick those spider shims into the pistons, cover backside of the pads with red anti-squeal goo, and slide the pads in.
Always use the shims when swap from Pagids to OEM Textars.
No squealing.

Alon, with OEM pads I never had a problem with squeal except after a hard day at the track. Blowing out the rotors/calipers etc. with compressed air fixed it. I suspect you have race pads installed which are noisy when cool. The OEM pads from the dealer come with anti-vibration shims and I always use the spider things. They help a lot.

Oem Textars will look like this
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]

clean and dry everything thouroughly, relube the sliders w/ a dab of caliper grease, a little goes a long way. I rarely use the spiders they are a PIA and aren't needed w/ street pads that are kept clean(and dry).

Can anyone please confirm the parts needed for this?

1 Front brake pads (Textar)
2- Front spring-like shims (round, 4 per side)
3- Brake shims (my supplier says that they're integraded into the brake pad)
4- Rotors

Can anyone confirm number 3 to be true?

Can anyone post pictures of these components just so I am well prepared? Sorry to be a PITA and thanks for your patience with me.

Hey Bob, it definitely does not have higher quality/track pads installed. I suspect that they're a crappy OEM alternative since the guy I bought the car from had to change them and probably wanted to spend as little as possible for them.

Alon, Re: #3, the pads I bought for my 96 C4S from the dealer had the shims incorporated with the front pad. As I recall the rears do not have nor need them. All have the spider things. Various pads supplied as Porsche parts for the 993 had Textar, Pagid or (once) Brembo printed on them. I suspect Porsche uses a variety of suppliers although I think Textar is Pagid.

Man, I got some serious SQUEEEKS! Just like most folks. Under very light braking it sounds like I need new brakes. But, under heavy and firm braking. NOT A SOUND! Go figure. But, I just decided that it isnt a biggie. As long as it stops on a dime. I live with some noise just like the rest of the car.

Agree with Alex and Bob. The "spiders" ARE useful. I run OE pads on street and Pagid Orange for track use. Initially I left the spiders off to determine if they really were worth the bother. POs squealed sooo loud at the track I got black flagged because they thought my brakes were in trouble.... they weren't, just obxiously loud. Didn't get better once hot, nor under heavy braking (and yes I bedded them per Pagid's procedure). Deglazing the pads worked only temporarily. Subsequent DE I tried the spiders and the noise went away... just the mild squealing when cold on the way to the track that most others report. I was sold, the minor hassle of retaining the spiders is worth the trouble.

Like Ray, I run Textars without any anti-squeal spiders the few times I drive on the street and have had zero squeal. I also coated the back side of the pads with high temp anti-seize compound to avoid any chattering/noise.

Alon,

Yes, the shims are an integrated part of the OE Textar pads. With new rotors and fresh pads, you should be off to a quiet start. But I, too, hate those spider thingies and have not experienced any squealing at all without them. I use LubroMoly high-temp paste on the back of the pads and I've been silent for maybe 45K miles now.

Thanks again everyone. I am looking forward (hopefully) to quiet brakes and a louder exhaust once I deal with that end of the car.

Dumb question, do spider shims help spread out the force from the pistons at all, or are they strictly for anti-squeel? From the posts above it sounds like they are pretty useless.

I just bought new calipers and the guy at the dealer (I got a pretty good deal) said I should use them. Since I change the pads about every two months I am leaving the cardboard backing so they don't stick.

TIA,

Jim

IMO, just squeal. The metal backing is much thinner than the pad backing.

I have been without them for 3 years now. Probably will never go back.
