My mechanic told me never to put 0-40 on my engine. He scoffed at the Porsche recommendation and told me not to read too many Porsche boards
Seriously I trust his opinion which comes from over 30 years of experience in 911 engines fixing them and racing them at the top level of competition... He recommended only to use 15-50 with the exeption of winter up North which makes sense.

As for the "heat" comments...LOL.. a little spat here and there.. its interesting, like Mexican food! Caliente

89K on my car - oil consumption something like 2-3K per quart of Mobil 1 0W-40. Tranny/clutch fine. This with engine tray off and tranny tray on. Also, car feels fine at full speed on teh back straight at Watkin Glen.

As others say, I've heard the engine tray can trap heat badly but the tranny tray doesn't trap much heat. DOES have to be removed to do the engine oil filter change, though.

So, based on personal experience, leave the tranny tray in.

DJF1 and Ray-

Not to hijack the thread....with 15W-50, my oil consumption was 1500-2000 per quarter. Now with 0W-40, at 2000 miles, hardly any consumption!. Also noticed less oil leakage from the chain-housing.....is my engine just breaking in? (now have 17000 miles, had 8K on purchase) or is the oil?
