OK, after searching other threads and checking www.p-car.com, I still can not find what I need. I have a 1997 Carrera S with the switchblade style remote key (quite possibly one of the dumbest and ugliest designs in the history of the automobile). I have read the p-car thread on taking it apart, sticking the key into a lighted key-head and transferring the remote electronic internals into the new, seperate housing. From p-car, I have noted part number 993.618.959.12 for the plastic pieces that create the remote housing. My local dealer does not recognize that part number and are quoting me part number 993.618.259.02 which is the the remote housing and the internal electronics.
Can anyone help shed some light on this subject for me? I have no doubt that the dealer could be wrong.
TIA,

Alon,
Gert at Carnewal and Gabe at Strasse (Calif) both stock the conversion kit to junk the switchblade key assy and convert it to the modern style. Call or email one of these guys. That's where I got mine.

P/N 993.618.959.12 is the correct part number for the remote housing with no 'guts'. You transfer the 'guts' from the switchblade. No reprogramming necessary.
P/N 993.618.959.02 is the remote housing w/guts. Will need to be programmed to the car.
Dealer is confused. Easy fix - call Sunset Porsche and order the housing.

My dealer is more than confused. Thanks for the clarification. I'll check with them again. I would prefer to source one locally to me (Toronto) to avoid the over-the-border hassles.

LOL. I'm still dying to figure out how to use a late model Porsche (996 style) remote key head with our 993 systems. They are both 315 MHz so there's got to be a way...

Wow, my dealer must be smoking something odd. They have quoted me $93.00 Canadian (about $75 USD) for p/n 993.618.959.12 (this is after arguing that I gave them the incorrect part number and then somehow mysteriously finding it).
It looks like I'll be contacting someone state-side for it. That's just outrageous for two pieces of plastic (and I'm not a cheap person).

Interestingly enough this p/n 993.618.959.12 is not in PET catalog(PET6 last update 171 15.12.2003). That probably explains why dealer could not immediately find it.
Also, this version of PET catalog doesn't have separate part for just remote housing "without guts".
Strange...

993.618.259.12 does work and it's apparently just the housing (confirmed by searching on the Pelican Parts site). They have it listed for about $61 USD.

Alon,
The 996 keyhead requires alot more information to program. And the small transponder pill (the radio transmitter) is different. If you don't have the key head transmitter no. (22 digits, if n/a cannot ever use that head again $158). immobilizer code, key learning code, DME code amd ignition code, you cannot program a 996 keyhead. 993 remote is a bargain.

I wouldn't do the 996 type to save any money, I like the design especially since I own one from a Carrera GT (beautiful piece of design). I do have that 22 digit number for it but everything else seems very complicated to execute.

Alon, You need to be using the PST to program, and then it is just a matter of the right numbers in the correct sequence in the correct screens. And retrieving the correct information from your dealer for your car.
