Any tricks to reinstalling the alternator/fan assembly? I did not notice any keys to the position of the fn housing on the motor case. I dropped it in and tightened the stap but the fan housing seems very close to the crank pulleys. How tight should the hold down strap be?
Hey Dave, I just replaced the alternator in my car not three weeks ago. I can tell you, there is a dowel pin on the top of the case, and it must line up with the shroud. I too was very unsettled by how close the shroud sat in relation to the crank pulley. I didn't take the time to note the tolerances before it was removed, but as soon as I started to put it back together, I imediately started thinking to myself, "are they supposed to be that close together?" Ect. It looked as if the fan shroud and crank pulley were damn near touching. If the shroud is lined up with the dowel pin and you tighten the strap, it should settle itself into place. Once you think you got it secure, take a flashlight and look very very cloesly at the crank pulley, there should/will be clearance between the fan shroud/pulley. Also, be careful not to break the belt roller doo-hickie.
I don't have my manuals with me (i'm in Canada, spying on the enemy) so hopefully, someone will chime in with the torque specs. I just used the "feel" method, but it is hard to quantify that into words.
I'm a little worried yo didn't find the dowel pin. Check the pulley clearance for me. If you're looking straight down, it almost looks like they are overlapping, but once you get your head down there with a flashlight, you should see a safe clearance between the two.
The dowel key was the tip i was looking for. It finally dropped in. Yes, the fan shroud does seem close the crank pulley but there is clearance between them. I buttoned it up it and took it for a test run - everthing seems fine.
