Does anyone have the link for the scanning system that a guy sold on the net for about $125 that could attach to a laptop or PDA and read codes and reset them. I searched the archives and can't find it now. Someone posted it about 5 months ago as I recall.

"I've seen a "ton" (more than 100) '95 993's with the round connector in the passenger footwell so they are far more common than you know,..."

Well, I guess you haven't seen all of them, as I just worked on a '95 993 yesterday
and many in the past with the OBDII type connector.

A DIY unit that cost less than $50 in parts was posted here on Rennlist & on the 964
forum. It used a PC applet connected via the serial port. Just do a search.

I talked to the tech rep at Actron and he recommended I go back and exchange it for the 9125 ($75)
That model seems like it will just give the code number.

Did anyone consider a unit that gives any live data? Like the CP 9145. I know a lot of stuff will not show up because it's proprietary, but I'm just wondering if some of what they call PIDs will show up because they are generic.

Ron, the Actron rep said the 9145 was his favorite, but at $250-300 its for the serious diy guys.

And you are correct in that the 9125 just gives code #'s that u have to look up, his main consern was the 9135 will be obsolete for future cars(CAN system) and the 9125 has already been made to accept the CAN system.

Bill,

It would nice to hear from someone that has one of the CP9145 units to find out how much information really would be available from it when hooked up to a 993.

That say the CP9125 seems like a very good basic unit. You hook it up and read the code.

993 diagnostic connector types per Porsche wiring diagrams:

1. Early 993 (Model 95) - round 19 pin connector (OBDI interface)
2. Early 993 (Model 95/2) - OBDII type 16 pin connector - DLC, (OBDI interface)
3. Late 993 (Models 96/97/98) - OBDII type 16 pin connector - DLC, (OBDII interface)

DLC - Diagnostic Link Connector, defined by OBDII spec J1962

"Loren,

Porsche/Bosch from '97 or '98 produced all OBDII cars for the ROW.
Some early USA '96 cars have OBDII interface problems to CA emission testers which
may require a waiver. Early 993s with the OBDII connector but with the OBDI interface,
require the use of the Hammer, the PST2, the iScan, or the DIY units.

If this is true(I have no reason to doubt you) It must be for '98

My '97 is a 55 pin OBD1 on the main harness

"My '97 is a 55 pin OBD1 on the main harness"

Maybe Porsche still had some early '97 ROW cars with OBDI.
Not having seen many ROW cars (mid to late '90s) here in the U.S., you're
probably right. Many ROW cars (3.2s) came to the U.S. in the '80s, though.

I have a early 993 (Model 95/2) with OBD II type 16 pin connector (OBD I interface).

Is there a low cost OBD reader available that will work?
Will a OBD I reader work with a OBD II connector?
