Here's another Kumho alternative for you. Try the Kumho Ecsta ASX's. Cheap, quiet, incredible wear and I've never had an issue with grip. I have these 18" on my car and swap them out for Victoracers when I go to the track or an AX. However, I have run on these tires at an AX and at Sebring before getting the Victoracers and was amazed at how well they held up. I've put 10,000 miles on them and they look incredible. You'll save $200 over the MX's and much much more over the S02's or MP.

Kumho MX's do have good grip, good price and are the LOUDESTtires I have ever owned. They are fine if you have a loud car and don't care, but I run them on my BMW and in my opinion they are too loud.

Are any of these Kumos N rated tires? I have Ecsta's (don't know off hand if they are ASX or not) they are quiet but don't inspire lots of confidence in high speed sweepers, or entering hot into a hairpin. The seem noisy when pushed. I know that the tires I am running are not N rated. I needed rubber NOW and I could not wait for the Bridgestones that I wanted so they slapped them on and away I went.

Dunlop SSRs, especially if you don't put many miles on your 993.

I have used the Kumho MX tires (have them right now, in fact) and are very sticky for the street. Like some have said, more stick than you will ever need for the street and I use the car daily in the canyons. I also agree that they are a very loud tire.

I would not even consider using the 712s on the 993 from my past experience on another high performance front wheel drive car I had them on.... just not a performance tire with weak sidewalls and noisey to boot as they wore.

Here is another tire to consider... the Fuzion ZRi tire made by Bridgestone. I bought these to experiment with when I was setting up my rear alignment settings and wanted a cheap tire I could burn through while playing with different settings. To my surprise, I ended up liking this tire very much. A bit less sticky than the MXs, but are very quiet while still providing enough stick for me, plus it does have relatively stiff sidewalls. It is a much better tire than the Kumho 712, IMHO.

If I did a lot of freeway or daily driving and only used the car for occasional runs in the canyons, I would be more than happy with these tires. Seeing as I travel canyon roads daily, I opted for more stick and will tolerate the noise of the MXs for now.

Good luck with your choice.

My car had Kumho 712s on it when I bought it, and I couldn't wait until they all wore out to switch to SO3s. The SO3s ride quieter, smooter, and have *way* more traction than the 712s ever did. Even my wife noticed the difference in ride quality and noise, without prompting by me.

Just my $.02...
