As Robert stated above the tire type is just as, if not more, important then the size. I have a set of the Dunlop SSR's on order(225's and 265's). I'm switching over from the SO3's (225's and 285's). While I like the SO3's many of the tire "guru's" around here have recommended the SSR's. The SSR is an R compound tire but lasts much longer then your typical R compound. Viken highly recommended these tires.

fb fisher, you are right. way too early in the morning.
i am trying to say if the rear is smaller than oem width, then cp may get more oversteer and tail happy. i need coffee.

For the street? Is it legal to drive an R compound tire on the street?

it's legal to drive r compound on street. but depending on which r compound, some are rather dangerous if wet (such as mpsc).

You should definitely stick to 265 in the rear if you are keeping 225 up front. I really never liked the 225/285 combo - always provided me with too much understeer (even with adjustable sways). I now run 254/285 on my street wheels (Goodyear F1 tires) and 225/265 on my track tires (SSR - seem as wide as the Goodyears).

Fred,

R compounds can be run on the street provided they're DOT-approved. The R designation just means that they're extra sticky (and have a limited life).
