The Porsche Carrera 40 Jahre is Porsche's 40th anniversarry 911 (Jahre is German for "year").

It's a very special Carrera with many unique features (extra power, special paint, wheels, interior, etc).

Go grab the latest copy of Total911 magazine. There is a winter driving article in it written by me that covers the details of this great car.

Alon, I hear you. I miss the quirkiness too, which is why I hold onto my 993, cherish the 914/6 and am looking for an early 911 longnose. But I definitely dont want to drive any of these pieces of history everyday to work.
Try this link for a sorted big motor 904 relica. Chuck Beck of 550 relica fame will also be making one available soon.

That's a ton of $$$ for their "904". I'll take my sweet time and built one from a Beck kit if and when they ever finally release it.

I know of a spectacular 1973 911e with rallye package (big fuel tank, suspension, etc) with 110,000 original kilometers (70,000 miles). Blue on black with no repainted parts whatsoever. You interested?

i like it. would this engine be prone to the RMS problems of other 996s?

Alon,
I'm looking for a pristine 'S', pre 73. But thanks.

To others who havent driven the 40th, its no cupcake boulevard cruiser. Rather stiff suspension, the way most folks mod out their 993 and still want it streetable. But its an evolved car from the aircooled 911 which took that technology as far as it would go after 35 years. There's an even stiffer factory suspension package for the 996 but this one is enough on my eye teeth and prostate on these famous Michigan roads.

Maybe Porsche should have marketed a '35 Jahre 993' with the equivalent upgrades to motor, interior, handling and visuals and we might be having a different discussion today.

Happy Memorial Day. Every time a miltary jet goes over (we are near the famous Willow Run airport), I'm reminded of those who have and are sacrificing so we can live free to differ even over unimportant things.

Thanks for providing this information. I didn't realize that the car was this much different than a regular 996.

40 Jhare features are as follows:
1- Carrera power package (345 hp vs. 320) includes cams, cylinder heads, intake, headers, ECU, etc.
2- Mechanical LSD transmission (all others are open diffs with the exception of GT3s, GT2s),
3- Turbo front bumper and larger, turbo radiators,
4- Special paint (Carrera GT Silver),
5- Flared side rockers (just like GT3),
6- C4s lower front lip,
7- polished and clear-coated Carrera lightweight wheels in 18 x 8 and 18 x 10,
8- Special perforated leather inside on seat centers, steering wheel, shifter and brake handle,
9- aluminum trim on the dash and aluminum gauge rings,
10- body color painted center console and seat backs,
11- Sport Chassis (030),
12-Heated seats,
13- Limited number badgibng (1963 produced world-wide),
14- PSM stability management,
15- Xenon headlights
Mine also had Bose sound, a CD changer, Porsche Sport Exhaust

These are incredibly wonderful cars. As far as I'm concerned, the best 996 that you can buy.

Well stated, Alon. I too own a 40th Anniversary virtually identical to yours (No. 0542). The longer I have it the more it grows on me and the more compliments I get.

I really debated the purchase of this car, a 04 C4S and waiting for a 997S. I extensively tested the C4S and figured I would give the 997S a year or two to refine itself. I could not be happier. I did see the many discussion threads with people saying that the 40ths were a bad marketing decision by Porsche, a loser because of the discounts, and so forth. In the end, it is an absolutely fabulous car to drive, a beautiful accumulation of specs and style as you have described, and a car I get many compliments and questions on.

So, I'm now thinking that even if I buy a new 997S, either 2wd or new C4 version - I will always keep the 40th for what it represents.

Hey a two Porsche Garage would be cool! In my unbiased opinion.

Did you also know that it comes with matching leather suitecases that is custom fitted to the trunk, just like the original Porsches? That's pretty cool!

The only problem I have with any 911 that a guy buys because of the investment/resale value is that unless you keep the car to very low miles, as in, try not to enjoy it too much while you own it; it will only be another used 911. Pehaps easier to sell because of what it is but it's probably not going to bring the premium $$ well worn and enjoyed. I guess you have to ask yourself what does Porsche ownership mean to YOU?
