Default Help for new owner... CEL repairs

Hello all...

I've posted here a few times that I have a new member of the family... '96 black on black C2 coupe, 6-speed, 39k miles, a true beauty. I bought her from Truspeed here in So Cal last Wednesday after a PPI by Hergesheimer (leaking steering rack was the only real issue identified in the PPI, which Truspeed is taking care of).

Trouble is, she CEL'd on me 2 days and 85 miles later and I've come to find through the power of Rennlist that the original owner in Chicago actually sold her back in mid-April to a private party after disclosing the CEL problem that he deemed to be, after many valiant attempts by his service guy, an SAI problem that likely required a valve job. Incidentally, he sold the car for almost $10k less than I paid less than a month later in So Cal.

Truspeed decided not to send the car back to Herg for repairs but rather to John DeBonis Imports here in Orange County... according to them, "he's the best in the area". I spoke with him today and he completed the steering rack and was beginning the CEL diagnosis. He said my current CEL has indicated O2 sensors AND SAI... based on this and his experience, he has recommended to Truspeed that all sensors be replaced at a cost of around $800. He does not believe that I have clogged SAI ports nor do I need a valve job at this point. He has assured me that Truspeed will "make it right" and that I've nothing to worry about.

Anyone heard of this shop? Comments? What about his diagnosis? Any help appreciated.

Jeff

Jeff,

Sorry, can't help you with your problem with the previous owner and present sellers. But, if I had CEL problem w/ my car, the first thing I'd do is buy a an OBD2 reader that can reset the code so I could see for myself what codes are being thrown to make a proper decision on the avenue to take on repairing the cause of the CEL. The code readers are less than $100 from your nearest corner auto parts store. Good luck... I feel for you. Hope your problem gets resolved to your satisfaction.

Jeff, sorry to hear you are experiencing problems with
your new ride. Truspeed is a first class dealer that
values their reputation in satisfying their buyers. I am
positive they will do whatever is necessary to make the
car right and you happy. No affiliation by the way. Allow
John Debonis to make the repairs as he sees it. You
will know the results of his expertise soon enough,
although I have had no personal experience with him.
Keep us posted. Steve

I'm so sorry to hear this. You finally get your car and then this happens. Your heart must have sunk.

Not having dealt with Truspeed, I don't have much to say about them. However, it looks like they have around $10K to fix your car, so I'd guess its pretty likely they'd take care of you.

Let us know how it goes!

I don't know. It sounds like a band aid approach to a much bigger problem. I would get another opinion. I would hate to see you have "their" shop fix it and a year later you're looking at a valve job and a SAI fix. You may want to hand the car back to them or insist on a complete top end job. Sorry you have to go through this. It takes the fun out of getting a new 993. Keep us posted and good luck.

Jeff,

Well the ambiguity is that your CEL "can" indeed be caused by faulty O2 sensors, and you have 4 of them (hence, the cost). The thing I don't know is whether the OBDII is specific enough to distinguish a discreet O2 fault or SAI fault. This should be easy enough for you to find out (ask an expert like Steve W.), or maybe someone here knows and could post.

If OBDII CAN differentiate, then you have added info to push for proof that their "fix" wil indeed address the problem. If OBDII is not that smart, is Truespeed willing to stand behind their CEL "fix," in writing, for say at least 2years/24K miles? I, too, would be very concerned that they are going to just band-aid this to get by just long enough to "end" their responsibility on this matter.

You may want to discuss w/ Hergesheimer wrt to their SAI fix.

hey trojanman ----> really sorry to hear the outcome thus far...
btw: as fill had mentioned... what are the codes? & imho i'd get a second opinion on a fix before letting them have "their best in the area guy" do the work. (sounds from the cars history... there's more to it)
also, even if the codes are not "the big ones"... i'd have them install a new "check valve" while they're doing everything else. (do a search re: "check valve" an old fill post on this forum) it's like a $50 part.

btw: is truespeed going to discount the purchase price of the car for all this hassle? also, have they @ all mentioned a refund? [not that i'm suggesting it... just curious as to how they do biz]... if they're such a great dealership and all as i'm currently looking for a good dealer.

bol & hope to see ya on a run soon.
