"and to check that the readiness states have been reset.:
Readiness states are SET when the OBDII conditions are met.
Readiness states are RESET when the CEL fault is reset OR if the OBDII conditions
are NOT met or if the DME is disconnected or loses backup power.

Thanks, Loren. I can always count on your expertise to straighten out the misuse of technical terminology. Someday I'll get this straight.
I'm still a little confused though. What does one call the state when the readiness states are not SET? UNSET? Then once the OBDII conditions are met, aren't the states reset to SET?

According to the actron reader I have just purcahsed and used, you plug in and when it scans for fault codes it comes up with one which is the SAI in my case. The SAI code can then be "erased" but in so doing when you look at the readiness codes for the SAI other codes are put into a "not ready" state and tghe car has to go through a number of "cycles" before they will reset to "ready"......ecobb993, dont know if this helps you ......

I guess it really doesn't matter what you call it, as long as everyone thinks in
the same terms. Usually when one says reset, one refers to a default state.
It's kinda like when you have a PC problem, you can push the reset button to
cause a re-boot to reset the computer to its default startup state. Then all
the previous conditions in OS are back to a normal/default state, i.e. reset.
