Unhappy No crank -- No start (Got it! Thanks, Matt!)

Car started normally this morning. But would not restart after shutdown. No click or turnover. Jumpstarted okay. Just before getting home, car started running rough...and I noticed a jumping in the speedometer. At home, again, car no start...no click no turnover.

Only thing I know is questionable is the CEL is on for the O2 sensor which i'm sure is shot. Would that result in this no start? I didn't think so but am up for suggestions.

Any thoughts appreciated. Gas guage says 1/4 full and it's always worked.

Have you tried the DME relay? I always keep one in my glove box just in case.

I'm the guy who submitted that items to Robin at p-cars.com No I have not tried that as there is no crank. With the DME relay bad, I had crank but no start. That said, I've got one and I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Sounds like maybe battery/alternator....Mine did the same when the alternator belt broke.
Maybe the jump gave the battery enough juice to get you home, or did you check your battery connections at the terminal? Also, loose ground somewhere?

With that, I have officially exhausted my technical expertise on this matter I'm afraid.
Hope it helps...

BINGO! I plugged in the battery charger and saw the fully discharged battery and went straight to the engine compartment (don't ask why I didn't look there first...I just didn't) and the alternator belt is broken. Whew! I can affod that one!

Anybody ever tired the pantyhose belt on a 993 to get it to the garage?

Thanks for the reminder, Matt.

If you only have 1 belt (RS mod. etc.) and it's broken then you don't have your cooling fan either, correct?
Just don't want you to over heat it.

3 belts. AC, Alternator (middle belt) and main.

I know that if you fully charge your battery, you're good for about five or so miles before the car starts shutting its systems down...How far is your mechanic??
(Now, just don't ask me how to install a new belt...)

Replacing the belt(s):
Per Robin's web site www.p-car.com it is a 6 on a scale of 1-10 in difficulty.
Looks like it requires 1 special tool also.
Good DIY article w/lots of photos. Hope this helps.

Yep, I checked that site out right away and except for the "special tool," I've got the tools and ability. Anyone know if there is an alternative for that porsche tool??

IIRC, that "special tool" is nothing more than a short triple-square. You can pick one up at Pep Boys, and cut it down if needed. Alternatively, just use the one that came with your car in your toolkit.

Yup, if there's not one in your toolkit, and if your local dealer doesn't have any, pick up a set at Pepboys for under $10 and cut it down.
