Default OK! - CA smog pass!!

it's that time again, the feared smog check. But my mighty steed passed with flying colors again. 2.5 yrs after the top-end rebuild for SAI clog fix, with new valves etc, and all is well. all readiness codes in the computer were fine, and the emissions values were very low (2ppm HC at 2500rpm vs 130 max)

very happy

Dave,

Is there a reason why you would be concerned after only 2.5 years since the top-end rebuild? Did you replace your OEM valve guides with aftermarket ones? If so, I don't think that the carbon issue will be a concern of yours for many, many years to come.

How many miles did your car have when you had the rebuild done and what did the mechanic say about your OEM valve guides (pictures?). How much oil was the car consuming? Thanks in advance.

No particular reason to worry about it, other than the fact that I live with a background fear that that CEL will come on and i'll have another $5k bill to swallow. the valve guides were not OEM replacement, and i had a bunch of other things done too all documented on Rennlist at the time.

When it was done, the car had about (i think) 48k on, and now it's 67k. Oil consumption wasn't bad but i never really measured it. The problem was the CEL and you could hear the tapping from the worn guides. I had already had the hydraulic lifters changed before the CEL came onto the scene.

Since then i always redline the engine at least a couple of times on my commute through Topanga (but only in 1st or 2nd of course........)

oh, and one other thing - wouldn't you know. The car threw the alternator belt tonight, and that was a fast way to find I have a dead, dead battery.

Great
