If you count the previous reincarnations (porschephiles, porschfans, porschelist) of Rennlist then I've been here on and off since around 1989 (I can't believe it either) with most of that time spent not even knowing how to change my brake pads (i was afraid I'd break something and I did). And while it is a shame to have lost people from back then this place continued on just fine without them. Some would agree its gotten better!

So every year like clockwork the "experts" and their fake accounts start a petty flame war. Last year it was over Adrian's 993 book, the year before someone wasn't getting the respect they thought they were owed(and on and on and on). It is a shame to lose their experiences but if they walk away this place is not going to collapse overnight ESPECIALLY if they take their fake user accounts and "Use the search" replies with them.

For every active poster there are 20 lurkers that are more than capable of helping people but don't. Instead of replying with "Use the Search" just don't post a reply, no one is holding a gun to your head and it might just draw people out of hiding. And if no one posts an answer and you still think you need to then post a link to a thread. Not everyone knows how to use the search function properly and even those that think they do still can't find things sometimes, no matter how trivial the question. Even the self-proclaimed experts were clueless beginners at one time so please remember back to that time and treat the rest of us like you would have liked to have been (and probably were) treated.

When would *you* simply respond "use search"?
I agree completely. Not only is it unreasonable to expect people to retype answers which are in some cases quite technical and long, but from the point of view of the person with the query, 9 times out of 10 you will get your answer a lot faster by searching the archives. It certainly works for me.

So if you are genuinely interested in the answer to your question, it makes sense to search first. I can't understand how anyone could object to this, and by the way it is a universal element of forum etiquette, and not unique to the 993 board.

Wisdom doesn't go away. It gets passed down. There is a lot of collective wisdom on the board. How many times have you read a reply on a post from someone to whom you told the answerto that exact question years (months, weeks, whatever) ago? Pretty cool watching it get passed around.
Same falls true. I don't think I'll miss wisdom, just the camaraderie.
Hi Mark,

Very well stated, and I couldn't agree with you more....I do think the comaradie will come around too....

So lets go racing! Are you going to Las Vegas this weekend? Phoenix next?

Now, would I refer to you or any of your extra special friends if I had any problem or question with my car whatsoever? No I would not. Have I ever directly? No I have not. Have they ever responded to a question I've posted? Not that I can recall, I could be wrong I don't know. I would and have asked Steve W. because I know that he's genuine and I don't need to deal with a crass, arrogant attitude like your post. Like I said it's all in the delivery and your response to my honest opinion furthers the division of this board and is apparently what you guys want.
Your friends got their panties in a bunch because they're not getting the respect that they *demand* when they speak up about something they don't like. You've got to earn it and not demand it....and I think you know that too.
I really don't care if you would refer a question to those who have left or not But the fact is, hundreds if not thousands of members on this board and the racing board have. And have been helped immeasurably by them.

If you reread my original post in this thread it says "Yes there are still some very knowledgeable people, and people that are eager to help, but the depth and breadth of knowledge is diminishing. " I was thinking of Steve among others. But my list keeps getting shorter. And that is the point of this thread.

Arrogant? As I said, I suspected you might take it that way. Maybe I should make it a poll and ask the board whose advice each member would rely on more. But you probably don't want to know the results of that.

Your arrogance and respect sensitivities are yours. Don't try to make them mine, or the boards.

Basic requirements to become a member of my race team are wit and intelligence and a realistic sense of self. So your statement is incorrect. Would you like to find out for sure?

As to my friends, I have many on this board. I have no idea if any of them wears panties.

All
You can see the venom reference joke in it's context in the "More thoughts, not OT ...(and a response to the refundees) " thread, first page.

One data point on Mike's "depth and breadth of knowledge" reference: If you'll check the "Moderators" box, you'll notice that we're down to one. It appears as if Viken has left the building.

You know what else is diminishing? The attitude. Obviously it's not gone yet though is it?

Oh and by the way, it's not a raceteam and I've never been interested, thanks for the invite though....

In another thread someone said there is more going on here than meets the eye. To have all these people quit over what?? and now Viken leave. I feel like a mushroom.

Greg

I'm not sure how much of the story I know, but I'm pretty sure we have lost Viken.

That is a shame. He is truly a one stop 993 encyclopedia. He had the answer to every 993 related question asked. Technical, racing, mods, etc. There is alot of stuff happening right now and I know Rennlist will continue to move forward and flourish but the collective wisdom of the board has gone down more than a notch.

If these folks were valued members of the race and other rennlist boards, why aren't they staying there where they feel sufficiently appreciated? Why drop out of the place where they find and give value?

Don't get me wrong, I think they should stay - I just don't know why if the 993 board is so offensive to them, why not only go where they are happy instead of withdrawing entirely - makes no sense to me.

And what's this about using other screen names? I only have one, you mean some people come on here disguised as someone else and stir the pot? Wow!?! Are these the same people who are complaining about the qualitiy and integrity of the memberships participation?

I had the same though when I read that Steve and you were on my mind as a prime example of the remaining wisdom, ViperBob too. I'm sure it was just an overstatement.

Steve

Please read all my posts in this thread. You are specifically mentioned as one that remains.

You were one of the ones I was refering to in my first post that didn't name specific resources that are still here. (Thank God - and baby please don't go))

Mike,

Glad to see that the head Turtle is still here! I appreciate your post and your sentiment, and also that you are staying. HWFM is "your" baby, and it is cool how it embodies my philosophy and style of driving and track aspiration. I'm glad that you created it, and even more pleased that you're still here to head it.

While I do not know personally anyone who has left, it was EJ that I appreciate much as we had conversations loooong time ago when I was but a 993/Rennlist newbie. Not only do I appreciate his vast contribution to the wiring harness recall, but he has also helped me by answering questions that I had then. And as if that were not enough, he sent me, completely gratis, a pair of BreyKrause inner seatbelt mounts, yes free, not even asking for shipping, and all because he knew that I was going to be getting my 993 into track mode. That is the generosity that embodies this community. If you see him or communicate with him, let him know that I will always remember that. Likewise, I continually try to be as accomodating and helpful to others, in the "pay it forward" sense, because it makes us all better in the long run. Thus it is with enormous sadness that EJ went ballistic in his post against Alan. Did you see that? It was more than angry, it was hostile, threatening, and arguably criminal. I was more than a little shocked to see such words attached to his signature. Assuming that those words were not taken out of context, they demonstated the worst side of a guy that I respected and enjoyed having on this board. I hope that for his sake, he calms down and realizes what he had said, and the damage that he inflicted to a community that he had contributed so much to. I wish him, and the others, well. Whether they decide to return is not the issue in my mind as much as the behavior that was demonstrated here. Technical gee wizardry will always be accessible. Witness Steve W.'s post. One ought not excuse poor behavior because they contribute well in other areas. Poor behavior is poor behavior, by anyone, no exception. Thanks for listening, take care, and print us more shirts, friend

Respectfully,
Ed

Mike is an English major - brevity is important.
I on the other hand sell words, so I have many.

What he meant was:
"Some, but not all people with Tech Advice you could trust are gone, but others remain, including, but not limited to Steve W, VB, Loren, and others who although not specifically mentioned here have contributed greatly and whose value to the board should not be ignored, diminished or overlooked."
