Default A few questions about a 1995 993

I went and looked at the following car tonight.

1995 993 Tip, which is what I want, so leave the bashing in the closet.

60,000 Miles

241 Shorter shifting travel - "This is wierd since it is a Tip"
249 Automatic transmission
331 AM/FM Cassette w/2 door speakers
398 Left outside mirror - electric - plain [Prior to 1996]
398 17 " 5-Spoke Wheels (P205/50ZR17 front, P225/40ZR17 rear) [1996]
437 Comfort seat left
438 Comfort seat right
454 Automatic speed control
650 Sunroof
939 Soft leather rear
982 Supple Leather Seats/Trim

The owner put on the Turbo Twist 18's, with new Dunlop 9000 with less and 1,000 miles on them. He put in the wood trim, and sport steering wheel to match, also has original. He also put on a OEM Turbo bumper ( What could I sell this for) as I would go back to stock. It was super clean, and drove like a dream.

The concern on the car was on the passanger side, at the bottom of the windshield there seemed to be what looked like rust under the paint and the seal. Is this possiable?

I am going to talk to my wrench on Wednesday, as he has serviced the car for the last four years.

Did I say this car was only 2 miles from my house!

Thanks

Michael

Michael,
The car looks very sharp. I like it very much. If you don't want the turbo bumper please let me know as the most of folks prefer the look of the turbo front including myself. As far as the rust near the windshield (I've heard this is a common problem), and it still might be covered under the corrosion warranty...and being the 95 year model, one less CEL issue to worry about. Good luck.

I believe it is possible (the rust). I've read several posts over the years where this was fixed by Porsche. Could have been a 10 year rust protection warranty? Not sure of the details.

Have the car checked out including all the potential bodywork. Negotiate with the seller for the items that need to be fixed. THAT IS, if this is the color you want, you definitely want a TIP, etc. Otherwise, keep looking. They're out there.

Good luck,
chuck

If the rust turns out to be nada, it looks like a great car Michael! Personally, I'd keep the turbo bumper, but if you decide to sell it, new they retail for approx $1400. Keep us posted-

Thanks Guy's the guy also a an OEM Turbo tail on the car, but he says it won't go with the car, if it gets a clean PPI, I am going to try and get him to throw it in.

Nice car.... according to Auto Check it was originally registered in 5/94, so I doubt the corrosion warranty is still in effect... My '95 has a small spot behind the rear window, I don't think it is very serious. Hopefully, yours is not either....

The rust around the windshield is a very common 993 problem.
It will have to be repaired unless you want it to get worse.

Michael -

Nice looking car. Where are you having the PPI done? If you're in Orange County and don't already have a place in mind, then Hergesheimers in Lake Forest is well known. The PPI for my car was done there back in February. Good luck, and enjoy.

I forgot to ask last night two more questions.

On the clock at the 1 position a red light came on with a picture of the car in it? What is this a warning for? It came on and off.

On the Tach, there was a BIG red !, he claimed it came on because the stock deck lid was replaced with a turbo tail, and he turned on the switch for the rear spoiler and it went off.

Are these big items to be concerned about!

1. That is the rear spoiler light that should go off once you are moving.
2. I dont see a turbo tail. That light comes on when any warning light is active and might be related to #1.

Marc,

Thanks, those were pictures from earlier this year before he put on the turbo bumper and tail.

Looks nice. Also make sure that, with the oversized (for a 95) wheels that he put in the steering kit to reinforce the shaft. Get a good PPI and enjoy

I spoke to my wrench that has worked on the car, he says that in the last 4 years the entire engine was resealed, and a new cam was put in as the last one had pitting on it. He had to go check in a car, so we didn't get to finish talk, but he said it was a really solid car.

How good is an engine re-seal and why would have 40K mile car need it.

Why would a cam have pitting on it?

Do those things sound like good upgrades?

Thanks

Hi Michael,

The rust is an issue to address ASAP as it will only get worse. The reseal is wasted money IMHO unless it either leaks like a sieve or it bugs you that much. Don't touch the cams ...unless you're in the mood for a slate of HP upgrades (that you would perform as a group to yield most performance/dollar).

The key on these cars (heck, any car) is the present condition and "qualified" PPI. The latter point is imperative as only someone intimately familiar with having seen scores of these cars (993s plus their predecessors) is the best qualified to pass judgment; anything less is second guessing and wishful thinking. Lots of "hacks" out there so beware. On that note, you are in Hergeheimer Motorsports' neighborhood, and Mark is an excellent wrench and all-around good guy (with a fab wife, too), and with a stellar reputation to back up my simple opinion. There are others of course; check around. Good luck, and let us know what happens

The light at the 1 o'clock position is the spoiler light, it goes off once you get to about 5 mph. If you replace the tail with a different one it does not go out and you get the "Warning" light (the silly "!" light). The simple fix is to remove the control module from the footwell on the passenger side and you will no longer be bothered by spoiler lights. (It's what I did for my tail replacement on the 964 and it works the same for the 993.)
