Steve;

I just came from my mechanic's shop and he had the LSD apart. It has only one disc on each side with a thick spacer.
what gives?

TIA, David

Hi David:

Your mechanic might not be familar with the 993's "abbreviated" LSD,...

There is a drive (friction type) plate and driven (steel) plate on each side. The spacer IS the driven plate.

So, is it correct that all 993s use a total of 4 friction plates?

Hi Eric:

Its fair to say that the vast majority of 993's use the 2 plate (4 plates total) LSD.

A few early '95 993's had the older 4-plate LSD such as what was used in the 964. The ONLY way to tell is to pull it out and have a look inside,...

Thanks Steve. Mine is a very early build (serial no. 0093, early '94 build) and it has the newer 2 plate (4 total) LSD. For what it's worth.

Hi Eric:

Thanks for the info, sir.

Personally, I've never seen a 4-plate LSD in any 993 but others have so I defer to them on that one,.......

Hi Steve,
DO the TT's also have only the 2 plate (4 plates total) setup? (43k miles and ready....)

Just to add to the confusion, the original 40% locking 964 LSD that was used up until MY92 (on NA models) also had 2 plates per side. Does anyone have a part number for the 993 LSD case, not the whole unit including gears & discs but just the case?

Hi JR:

Sorry sir,.......

TT's are no exception here: they ALL have the 2-plate LSD's. At 43K, its not very effective any longer.
