Porsche 993 Engine Cutting out Problem
Guys,
About an hour ago I went for a short drive in my 993 C2, after about 2/3 miles while driving at low revs the engine just cut out and died, I had to pull over and stop the car. I tried to restart the engine, but it would not fire up, it just kept on turning over, I did this several times but no joy. I waited about 3 minutes and then tried again but this time with my foot hard down on the gas pedal. When I did this the engine truned over a few times at first nothing and then painfully slowly fired up into life and started!
I drove the car into town, 10 miles, stopped and started the engine again, this time it started first time.
Has anyone had this problem before?
Any ideas what this could be and what is causing it?
Regards and Help advice most welcome!

Can you hear the fuel pump making a lot of noise? It makes more noise as it fails. It could also be a failing DME relay. Some don't completely fail, only have intermittent problems, especially when the circuits get hot.

I have a similar problem, in which the car sometimes "loses the idle"- when driving and approaching a stop light, if I push in the clutch and let off the gas, sometimes the idle drops all the way to zero and I have to restart the car.
It is my suspicion that this is due to a sluggish idle control valve, but until I take it apart and clean out the collected gunk to see if that cures it, I'm not in a position to make an authoritative diagnosis.
Does your car die while under power, or while coasting?

I would start with the DME first. If it has a 944 part # on it you should replace it. The DME is in the main fuse box and is one of the big black "boxes" that plug into the fuse board. DME usualy dont have the car cut out while in motion but will cause a hard/not start problem.

Hi Michael:
I'd "second" the DME relay suggestion; thats the most common culprit.
After that, I'd be looking at a possibility of contaminated fuel. One can confirm this by measuring the fuel flow coming out of the fuel filter. You oughta have 3.4-4.0 bar of pressure.
