Ken,
Do you have a dial gauge indicator? The intake and exhaust valve lift can be different for each cylinder so you might need to measure! It should be a real simple procedure, you basically set the piston to TDC and then push the rocker arm with your hand and read the valve lift on the dial guage. On the intake valves you want a minimum of .2mm and maximum of 1.85mm. For the exhaust valves you want a minimum of .6mm and a maximum of 2.25mm. Its very similar to adjusting the valves on the 964 only your not adjusting the valves, just measuring. On a NA engine the stock valve lifters are 993-105-141-05, 993-105-141-51 are .5mm shorter and 993-105-141-61 are 1.0mm shorter.

Hi Gents:

First, Atgani:

I'm not at all surprised that your engine needed a top-end overhaul at 58K; that reflects what I've seen with these cars with the undertray still intact. Guide wear is an issue and one came through here that had .025 guide clearances. Those valves were wobbling sideways on the seats and they needed a lot of work to clean them up. Nothing has changed since the 2.7 days: if the guides are worn, you'll hear a lot of extra valve noise (much like ones that are out of adjustment).

I simply order the same lifters as the ones I removed. The PET shows the 3 different part numbers (I have the ROW & US version) but the rockers are all the same (different ones for intake & exhaust) for the hydraulic lifter'ed engines.

N/A Engines only:

993.105.141.05
993.105.141.51 Size 1
993.105.141.61 Size 2

Ken:

I would look at one of the quiet ones and see what part number it is, compared to the noisier ones you have. I would also have someone who is very experienced check the sideplay on the valve assembly to see if your guides are excessively worn.

The wrong lifters will be noisier since they are not operating within their proper range of travel.

Steve, with very reasonable milage between oil top offs, would one be safe in assuming the guides are in reasonable shape and that just the lifters may be going bad? I really need to go through the car's records supplied by the PO to see if the valves had ever been done. I don't recall that ever being part of the history conversations I had prior to purchase, but its been a good 6 months now......lucky I can remember yesterday sometimes! I do have the old SAI/CEL light issue....not sure how they all co-inside with one another.

Have you ever used the different sized lifters you mentioned in your post ?
Anytime you replace/machine the valves or valve seats your supposed to measure the valve lift so you know which size lifter to use! You can't rely on what was there previously. Whoever did your top-end rebuild should have known this...

Hi Chris:

If your oil consumption is reasonable 1500-2000/qt, then I'd look into which lifters you have.

Now, if you have the SAI/CEl issue, thats a bellwether for excessive carbon buildups and I would be checking the guides for wear as thats the primary source.

Default Quick help needed please - lifter sizes and markings

Hi guys,
I have had intermittently loud tappets. Today I pulled the LH exhaust cover to examine the lifter sizes so I can order new ones.

I have the #1E lifter and rocker arm (separated) in my hand, and its o-ring is in 2 pieces.

I don't see ANY markings on the lifter indicating which of the 3 sizes it is. Do I measure something? Where's the marking?

Any help at all is appreciated - I want to get this thing back together. Thanks!

(Here is a quote from Steve Weiner for background)
I think the lifters vary slightly in length to accomodate the production tolerances in the cam housings and still maintain lifter travel.

There are .05, .51, and .61 versions of lifters for these N/A engines.

Does anyone know how to identify the different lifters? I do not see any reference marks on my existing ones that I want to replace.

I'm interested as well as mine have quieted a bit since I got her, but still not where I think they should be. I'm considering doing it myself, particularly if all of them can be done w/ the engine in the car. I had no idea there were different versions.

I have a 1996 w/ 33k miles on my car and noticed a light tick-tick on the driver’s side. It sounds more like an exhaust leak.

In this post they mentioned a clack clack. Is the tick tick sound a normal sound for our engines?

Any help would be appreciated before I start an unnecessary repair.

A "tick-tick" noise can be a loose plug connector, a spark jumping to ground, or an exhaust leak somewhere.

Failed lifters make a hard "clack" sound,...
