Hi Adrian,
Wasn't the 964 Carrera RS 3.8 litre a widebody? Wouldn't the drag diminish some of the advantage?

Actually, we have not really gotton the answer. By fast, do you mean, acceleration times, or top speed, or both? Could be a different for each scenerio.

If you could find a normally aspirated 911 with a RUF VIN yes they would but you are going to have a tough time of it. The only ones I know of are the 911SCR, RGT and the RGT and only the 911SCR is air/oil cooled to meet the requirements.
The 964 RSR 3.8 litre defeated all comers including the 993 RSR 3.8 litre on the European race tracks in the 1994 and 1995 racing seasons.
Ask Karl Ludwigsen about the 964 RSR 3.8s. He reckoned they were best normally aspirated race cars Porsche ever produced.
If you speak to the race teams who raced them at Le Mans in 1995 they wanted them back for 1996 but they were not available. Most teams switched to the 993 GT-2 rather than the 993 RSR or kept going with the 964 RSR.

its pretty funny, i knew this bunch would analyze the definition of "fast" thoroughly

i am not interested in the highest top speed...in fact, that has always been a weird thing for everyone to get caught up in (my opinion)... i mean, who cares if a street car goes 170 mph or 180mph top speed?

what i was trying to get at with this question = acceleration. call it 0-60 or call it 1/4 mile...whatever... looking to understand the fastest accelerating, NA, Porsche VIN, air-cooled, factory car of all time...

i think i hear Adrian saying that it is the 964 RS 3.8

How about the 1991 Carrera 4 RS? Based on the Carrera Cup 964, the lightened body was mated with the Paris-Dakar spec 4wd tranny. They say less than 20 were made but they weren't recorded at the factory? If talking acceleration, it hit 62mph in < 4 secs but maxed out at around 120mph... I think there was a 911&PW article about them a few years ago.

Are we talking top-speed or overall performance? There were some street legal 1973 RSR 2.8 Tourings that weighed less than 2,000 lbs and had 308hp that were awfully quick with monster tires and brakes

i love the debate.... still no definitive answer...

i have heard so far 993 RSR 3.8, 964 RSR 3.8, 1973 RSR 2.8 Touring...

and for Godsake, we are talking about acceleration here, not top speed!...

What about the 993 GT2? I was reading an article about this car today. It weighs less than a modern day Boxster (around 2000lbs) but has 450hp (if I remember correctly). I think its top speed is around 180ish.

It's a beautiful car nonetheless.

i found the answer in GT Purely Porsche magazine, back in the technical section...

no surprise, Adrian was right...

the 964 RS 3.8 litre engine put out 300hp...appears to be the same 3.8 that went in the 993, but the 993 weighs more... so according to GT Purely Porsche, the 964 RS 3.8 had faster acceleration times to 0-62
