Question Yokohama AVS ES 100

Help, I need new rear tires for my 1995 993. I can't fine the Yokohama AVS S-1 or the 008P the sales person at Discount tire recommends the AVS ES 100 as an replacement. My 993 is a weekend ride and smile vehicle only. Tire size 265 x 35 x 18. Anyone have any recommendations +/- on this tire. They appear to be very reasonable priced, which makes me very uncomfortable.

I used them on my 84 and wasn't very happy with them, they didn't grip as well as the Dunlops that were on the car.

I would recommend going a step up in the line.

I used ES-100s on a different car and felt they were decent/mediocre. On that car I went with Khumo MX (not the 712's... ugh!), and found them to be much grippier than the ES-100s, and also modestly priced.

Your decision on tire choice should be based on how you primarily use your car. If its a weekend car, and all you're doing is cruising, enjoying the scenery, then the ES-100's are plenty tire for you.

I agree with the previous post, I have used these on other cars, and they are quite good.

I had them on my 993, and I wasn't impressed with the wet traction or the wear characteristics. In the dry they weren't bad.

Agree with jdoc. It's a good tire, works great on my SC, and would be just fine for a 993. But what what are you looking for? If you want more grip at a reasonable price, go with the Kumho MX or Yoko AVS Sport. If you want to spend more money for the heck of it, buy a Bridgstone, Mich, or Pirelli. Won't get much more tire for your street use, but you will spend more

I've had them back to back with Pilot Sports. The Michelins were better tires, but 2x the price. I find the ES100s to be about as good in the rain and maybe 70-80% in the dry. Quiet, too.

Default alternative consideration

I've found that learning the limits on "lesser" tires can be quite fun on the track...

(In general I do not breach the limits of traction on the street very often... imho wet traction is should be far more important in consideration)

I find this especially true as you don't need crazy amounts of speed to achieve break away point. (eg. mscp)
cheaper tires usually are good for practising drifts and car control...
without wearing through an expensive...(bad for hot laps should be obvious enough)

IMO, the AVS ES is not good for any 993. Good tire for maybe Volvo, Audi, but not high performance even if it is a "smile" ride.

Few years ago, when I couldn't match my front tires, I purchased all 4 with Conti's N1's. It just gave me piece of mind that I had 4 excellent tires (not for track) and exceeded safety requirements. To me, I overspend when replacing tires.

Three things on my cars I refuse to skimp on - brakes, oil and tires. When any of these fail to perform because you've taken the economical option, the fix will not be cheap. IMHO of course.....

ditto for JDOC post. Based on your description of driving habits I think they are fine. I have them onmy second set of wheels I use for DE's and they are lousy. Just waiting till they wear out to get better tires. I had them for street tires before purchasing 18's with different tires and had no issues with them. For your useage I think they are fine.

Can't comment how they are on the 993 (have Pirellis currently), but have the avs-es 100's on my 325. Decent tire for dry grip, but must say, fairly noisy to start and plain aweful now. Kind of sounds like a knobby off-road tire hum amplified. Not sure what others have found with regards to this, but a thumbs down from my experience with them.
