Default First gear whine

My new to me 95 C4 coupe has a whine in first gear; it shifts fine, accelerates fine, but if you push the clutch in and coast with the shifter in first, it has a high pitched whine. Take the shifter out (neutral) = no whine. I've never heard this before on numerous 911s ... any ideas?

I know that on the 993 turbos the whine in first gear ican be indicative of a bent main shaft in the tranny. I was looking at a 96 turbo and passed on it because of the whine and it was going to be really expensive to fix it, the box in the turbo is specific to the turbo so trying to find a used box in good shape was next to impossible.I don't know if this pretains to your car and wish you good luck with it Doug

I did some looking into that, Doug ... seems like a possibility, except that this morning I noticed that the whine is present only in first but only for the first couple of minutes, once it's warmed up a bit it goes away completely. I would think if the shaft were bent it would be whining all the time.

Anyone got any other ideas?

I once had this happen when I put it a new gear ratio. After a while it went away.

Vic...

Might need to change out the diff fluid front and back. Some fresh Mobil 1 should do the trick.
