Default help, need accident info

i'm looking at buying a 993 that who's owner claims it was in a very mild collision , i have a copy of the original dealer repair invoice and amongst the items changed are: grv(?) fender, grv front panel, grv spare tire well, side rail, and front bumper cover, labor was @ 1500.00. i've contacted the dealer and they have no recollection of the actual severity, so any insight into wether or not this was necessarily a bad accident or not would be greatly appreciated, oh yah the srs was not deployed. thx glenn

Hmmmm......labor is only 1500.00!!.....I don't think it could have been that bad!
Maybe you can take the car to a Good body shop, and have them check it out!

What does GRV stand for? Was there penetration into the spare tire well?

I agree; a good body shop can charge about $1000 just to fill in a small bumper dent with pastic filler and respray the whole thing. The damage sounds minor.

I just found GRV, it is the last three digit code of the part number on a primered replacement panel. $1500 doesn't sound like much but out here in podunk world that will buy you almost 42 hours of body shop time at place that has an agreement with a major insurance company. A "GRV spare tire well" is the whole flat portion of the front trunk, my idea of "very mild collision" is one that cracks the front bumper cover not one where they had to replace the front part of the car.

Do you have part numbers for what they replaced? I just looked in PET and if they replaced a "side rail" that means there was damage to the frame.

that's what i was wondering, if the side rail meant there was frame damage, the part numbers are on the invoice( not with me), the toatal repair was under 10 k at a porsche dealer and that was when the car was, like, brand new (14k miles), i don't really know what to think, should i run or have a PPI done at another dealer for their opinion, thx gf

I would definitely take the car to a body shop for a lookover. They can eye the car for damage and look over the repair invoice and advise you.

If you can post the part numbers then we'd know for sure exactly what they replaced and I could post pictures to show you. Knowing that they replaced the front trunk I would walk away unless the car was discounted appropriately (MAJOR $$$) and I was prepared to deal with all the potential problems that arise from a body shop that thinks they know what they are doing. There are just too many unknowns and plenty of other cars available with no issues. Its not worth the headache!

A body shop will tell you in 30 seconds if the car has had bodywork done. If they are replacing a side rail and tirewell then it sounds pretty major to my untutored ears! Ask some experts as we are only guessing. If you are not sure then walk away.

Cheers,

David

As said by others, go to a body shop. As far as damage, sometimes they replace items that don't seem to need it but are done for safety reasons. I hit somebody with my Audi and the hood had a very small wrinkle in it. They replace the hood because (I was told anyway) it was part of the front crush-up protection and was slightly bent in the place it was supposed to bend. The damage seemed small and there was no airbag deployment but it seems like they replaced the entire front of the car.

it could be a case of over-repairing, but all the work was done at an authorized porsche dealership so i would assume they know what they are doing, although i could be wrong. i was kind of hoping that they were changing parts to keep the car like new, and since the insurance co was paying they were probably taking some liberties...

I really wonder if a body shop could spot any repair work on my 993, which just got a full respray and lots of new parts, after I smacked it up real good and bent the frame. Repair was $26k and I got to watch a lot of it being done. Every single tack weld looks better than new, wheel wells have the correct spray pattern, no Bondo, etc. Everyone who has seen it says it looks better than new. It really looks better than the day I bought it and it even feels stronger too.

26k? was it that bad? that kind of reassures me since the one i'm looking at had under 10k in damage and that's at a porsche dealer, by the way here are the part numbers: 993-503-032-09, 964-501-016-02, 993-501-033-01, 993-501-036-01, 993-599-055-00, 993-505-311-03, 993-505-011-00, 965-362-030-00 plus a bunch of little bolts, badges, and seals, etc. like i said labor totaled @ 1500.00, any insight?....thx gf

When you bend the frame while hitting a tire wall, well, yes. That's bad. $1500 is nothing. As long as it was well done, I wouldn't even consider that a prior accident. That could be a ding from a grocery store parking lot. But the shop I used (Euro Pros in Gaithersburg, MD) are the best of the best and charge accordingly.
