Default What should my idle rpm's be?

Just got my baby home tonight with new respray, LWF, RS clutch and new slave cyl. Idle is around 500. Is that correct? Seems pretty low. Is it easy to adjust and what should it be? Thanks.

Is that all you're gonna say? How was the homecoming? How is the LWF?

With a stock flywheel, mine is ~750 w/o the AC, and ~800 with it switched on.

Idle RPM with a LWF in my 3.8 is 960 as per the Porsche manual.

Cheers and enjoy your LWF.

More refined info. From the Repair manual 800 +- 40.

960 is for RS engine with the different cams.

Yummy Rick... well done.

FWIW, if your battery has been disconnected for a long period, expect your ECU to dump its knowledge. When that happens, the ECU reinitializes in "safe" mode. I recall a special procedure to reset the ECU.

Can't find it... searched everything. It is on RL somewhere though. Post your findings please.

Just found it!!! Copied and pasted for your enjoyment.

This is an OBDII issue - '96 on.

Readiness code reset routine:

Start engine, idle cold for approx. 2 min, 10 secs.

Accelerate to 20-30 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 3 min, 15 secs.

Accelerate to 40-60 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 15 mins.

Decelrate and come to a stop. Idle in gear for approx 5 mins.

Following the start engine phase the sequence of test conditions may interchange.

routine will be discountinued whenever:

Engine speed exceeds 3000 RPM
Large fluctuations in throttle angle
Road speed exceeds 60 MPH

Thanks Monique. Is this supposed to just automatically raise my idle? There's no place around here I can think of where I would be able to perform this, if this procedure is really that strict. I have to roll out of the garage, drive out of the neighborhood, wait at red lights and stop signs, go a few miles to the nearest big road. Can't I do something else?

Hmmm. I think Steve Weiner stated the process was quite inflexible.

I'll see what I can find... but I agree it is not very practical is it?

Dunno if this applies, but here's the instruction from Steve W, following my ecu re-map;

Turn key on for 2 mins without starting
Start engine without touching throttle and let idle for 3 mins
Allow 3 seperate cold starts for full adaptation

Again, not sure if this applies to your particular situation, but I'd give it a try-
