Frank,
I would echo Scott's comments - my neighbor put in a B&M and wasn't overly pleased in part because of the challenge in putting it in. It took me about 45 minutes to put in the Porsche part and I was very happy...so much, that my neighbor replaced his with the factory part.
I'd go factory...

I think you'll find plenty of feedback in the thread discussing it here:

Personally, I see no reason to pay twice as much as the factory RS part. Especially when they're virtually identical if you compare them side by side...Plus, there is something to be said for keeping everything "factory". I can tell you this however, just changing the shifter WILL shorten the throws a bit, but it will not improve the feel of the linkage. You need to RS shift rod for that.
I like mine, and it does make for quicker shifts, but to really make it all work well you need the RS rod, RS motor mounts and RS tranny mounts. After I installed all of these the car shifts much better, crisper and you get a much more positive feel from the tranny. Worlds better than the stock mushy vague setup/linkage, yet still very streetable.

I had heard good things about it and was not aware that the factory kit was actually cheaper / similar. This one is made of 303 Stainless Steel and fits the **** and boot like OEM. It has a million mile warranty by B. & M. with a 45% reduction in throw.
I'll let you guys know my experience with it.

I find the factory RS short shift kit to be nice. I like the fact that the shifter is a bit taller getting your hands closer to the steering wheel. The throw is a bit shorter but nothing that is mind blowing, just a bit shorter. I drove a Corvette and a 996 which had the B&M kit and liked it compared to the RS kit. It was very notchy and deliberate, but provide confidence. It also had a very short throw. I was not aware that the 993 version was out. I woul love to hear some feedback from someone tracking it as well as streeting that shifter.

Don,
Here are the individual part numbers and retail prices in USD according to PCNA
Shift Lever - 964.424.015.08 $57.45
Shift Fork - 964.424.017.01 $29.77
Shift rod - 964.424.020.35 $423.53
I'm currently in process of installing the shift lever and fork I purchased from DEVEK on the Christmas special. The shift rod cost was a little too pricey for me.
Hope this helps.
Scott

Don,
Buy these at Sunset Porsche in OR = Best prices IMHO (Dealer Cost + 15% for Rennlist and PCA Members).
e.g., The RS Shift Rod there is $380.00 + Shipping (they are very reasonable with their shipping prices).
Good Luck!

rkass,
Thanks for the thread referal. Is there any advantage to doing this when the engine/transmission are out for a clutch change? I can't tell if it be more accessible.

I would think so as you have access to the bottom of the car. You do have to remove shift **** from inside car first. Some say you can do without taking the console etc off, some say take the console off because its easier. I tried doing without taking console off, but I have the shift that is clipped onto steel shift shaft so it is too cumbersome for me not to do without taking off the console. Guess if you get leather shifter off before sending car in for clutch then your guys or you can tackle short shift install from bottom of car at same time. Wish I had Kelly's knowledge as I just had car in for clutch. Oh well, will get done this spring. Good luck.
