Hi All,
Here is a link to a gallery of pics of my BMW E30 M3 project which has consumed me for the last year (I still haven't figured out how to attach pics small enough for the size limit - but I'd be glad to email them to someone who does
). Anyway, the car which started out as a tired $6K 165K mile M3 has turned into this - an EVOIII clone. For those of you not familiar with E30 M3s, the US model weighed 2800 pounds and produced 192 hp from 2.3 liters. The rare EVOIII Euro-only model (and my car) produce 240hp from 2.5 liters.
It's turned out to be a fun car. Relatively fast - I surprised 2 E36 M3s and a G35 Infiniti coupe
But it's real claim to fame is it's handling. IMHO, one of the few BMWs (or cars in general) worth owning outside of a Porsche.
Anyway, now that it's done, I need another project!
Enjoy - here's the link:

How did you manage to clean up the interior so nicely?

I have been thinking of buying one for awhile....no room...
Did you repaint the engine covers? more details please....

They're powdercoated.
Specs - here goes:
EVOIII 2.5 10.2 to 1 pistons
EVOIII 2.5 crank
EVOIII 272 degree intake cam
EVOII 264 degree intake cam (on exhaust side)
EVOIII "green" injectors
EVOIII air flow meter
EVOII 2 piece header (50mm primaries and secondaries)
EVOIII 48mm throttlebodies
Bilstein sports/Eibach springs
BMW 528i sport 17x8 inch wheels
I used all BMW parts (except suspension).
That's a rare car you have - never seen one in person.

The interior was not easy to restore. Got lucky and found a nice set of seats whcih I had professionally dyed in the same color. BMW actually had one interior carpet set left. I jumped on it. What PITA to install!!!!

amazing....
I always wondered what the 2.5s were like...
Dynospot Racing here in San Jose rebuilt the engine on my car to a 3.2 .... DC there has a really nice E30M3 too...
I must check out your car when I come to Socal...

I'm amazed at the difference between the 2.3 and the 2.5 - like a completely different car. You're welcome to visit anytime.
Feel free to bring the GT3 too
I'm sure that car is nothing short of amazing.

ExploreI don't want to think about it.......
Let's just say the total is probably quadruple the purchase price. (I could have bought a Boxster). But looking back on it, I'm really happy with the final result - no corners cut. It's really hard to find these cars in nice condition these days. Low mile garage queens are worth maybe $20K - but they are still only 2.3 liter cars and still a minimum of 14 years old (time is just as deadly as mileage). So I bought a straight high mileage car and restored it instead. For the same money, I have essentially a "new" 2.5.

Joe,
rebuilding a car is always fun....dont think about the cost...if you like it...and enjoy it...just do it...beats drinking it or gambling it away....
One of early rebuild projects was a 1988 Cosworth with a Touring car engine in it...it was actually a rival to the E30M3s for grpA races....

Took me 2 years to build...and I sold it 8 months after I was done with it.....
now I am always on the lookout for something...
You did a great job with the car, esp with the stock BMW parts...they will serve you well....
enjoy it in good health

Really well done Joe......I believe the E30 M3 Chassis to be an outstanding example of the M Class. Much like the 993, it retains the SOUL of the car before the E36's and E46's came along.
Did you use Turner Motorsport for any of your products/restoration ?? I went to college with Will Turner and continuously raced him in various VW's and BMW's around Newport, RI........great guy and he's really turned his business into something special within the BMW racing world.

Thanks for posting the pics - someday I'll learn how to do this stuff
How are you able to rebuild a car and not know how to attach a pic. I'm the complete opposite. Originally Posted by jmarch

I've always loved the E30 ///M3. Classic looks and it really does remind me of the 993. Beautiful car and awesome job on the restoration.
