Oh dear, dear, dear, where to start the re-education process....
Clive,
I don't subscribe to the notion that we pay "very low" gasoline taxes in the US. Nor do I believe that what European countries pay in taxes is in anyway relevant to our tax structure. They choose their form of government and suffer the consequences such as we do. We are still a capitalist society(barely), and not socialist as many European countries are today. Additionally, $90. is $90. and just another unnecessary added tax to a already punitive state tax structure.
Jonathon (my given name), yes of course freedom costs. But the costs of freedom are not remotely related to poor government fiscal management. One could argue that because the price of freedom is so costly, we deserve the most cost-efficient, accurate, and accountable(not in Enron terms) form of government. I'd love to tell you what percentage of gasoline taxes, originally funded for highway/street improvements whether Federal or State, are actually used for that purpose. If I remember correctly it's less than 15%. I will look that up and repost if I'm incorrect. I believe taxes based on user fees are the correct way to tax in all facets of our society. I'd love to see a income tax based on spending (see HR-25, The Fair Tax Initative sponsored by Rep. John Linder, Georgia http://www.fairtaxvolunteer.org/smart/sketch.html) In the interim let's use user based tax funds as intented, or place the tax burden into the general budget where general taxes belong. Then everyone can see how their tax dollars are actually spent and make educated determinations on future taxes, and the tax policys of the representatives we elect to represent us in Congress.
Elke I love your plate! And yes, your government is clever as are all of them....
Stepping gingerly off my soapbox, I remain.....

But our government is not that clever - they take too much taxes and spend this money anywhere, nobody knows... that`s life!
