Default Shop Manual-Books

Well, bought a '95 C2 yesterday and am looking for the correct manuals and books. I orignally thought that I would have a 964 and so bought Adrian Streather's manual/book on that series. Don't believe he has one out for the 993 yet but looking forward to it when it becomes available.

Read numerous posts about CD options, the difficulties with the (expensive) Porsche shop manuals, etc. What essential 2-3 books/manuals do you reccomend a DIY 993 owner have in his library? Are the CDs helpful at all?

Thanks, and looking forward to the great support and discussion here at Rennlist.

The owner's manual is highly recommended for any owner, the workshop manual is a must for DIYers.

Have all the original owner's books, looking more for the shop manual, etc. Understand the challenge there is that updates may be missing and no longer available?

Unfortunately, there is no adequate subsititute for the factory shop manuals and they are out of print. Further, the manuals build on the knowledge in the previous 911's set. When I heard that Porsche was discontinuing the manuals, I scrambled and picked up every one that I needed over a one-year period. You can still find them on eBay, but they tend to be expensive. If you are a really serious DIY person, invest at the very least in the 993 manuals, about $400-500 on eBay, and a set of the 964 manuals, probably about the same price. The earlier sets, 65-71,72-83 and 84-89 are very useful as well, but not as esential if you have some basic 911 theory and design under your belt already. At today's prices, you could easily spend $2500+ for a complete set of air-cooled manuals. OUCH!

I have a copy of the seven volume 964 manuals I could sell. Also included is an eight volume (copy of the electronics volume) and the tech bulletins from 90 - 93 (might be a '94 too, I'm at the office now). I got these last year from Rennlist and could let them go for $450.

You can get a pretty decent copy of the factory manuals on CD for about $25, including shipping, from http://www.workshopmanuals.co.uk

Can I assume that the CD manuals shown on the Workshop Manual UK site is the same "slightly less than legal" and somewhat poor quality scanned version of the original that has been referenced other times?

What is the best source for a wiring diagram for the 993? Is this included in the factory workshop manuals or as an update? Is the 1998 model included in the 993 manuals or as an update?

I found the wiring info on the cd unreadable.

Yes, the CDs are not the best quality, but for the price, and considering that the factory manuals are NLA, they may be the best readily available.

Has anyone looked at the wiring diagrams that Porsche sells in pdf format at the TechInfo site? They seem just a bit expensive but anything has to be better than the quality of the scanned copies that are floating around.

Don't buy the 'workshop manuals'!!!! They are total crap. Keep checking e-bay for the 'less-than-legal'. What the hell, need the info for these older wonderful cars. If Porsche won't provide it, get it where you can. Just my $0.02.

Does anyone know if the wiring diagrams for a 98 are covered in the manual supplements? If so how would I figure out which ones?

Thanks,
Pete
