what about rust -- does anyone periodically check in the danger areas for rust?

what about maintaining seals...prevent from cracking by using Einszett seal treatment or other stuff...

Jauder:

Look at Jonathan's question above,....

Its a rust prevention measure. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of these cars and most rust problems begin behind impacted dirt, mud & leaves in places that people never take the trouble to look.

The factory galvanizing doesn't last forever,....its a sacrificial layer.

Oops, yup that's right ...that refers to US spec cars probably up to -89. In order to meet US ride height specs the factory installed 10mm 'washers' between the strut and shock tower. Many people lower their carts without taking out that spacer. I suppose it just puts a bit more stress on the components if it's left there after you lower the car.

1) Don't drive it to & from work.
2) Don't hit the track or autocross lot.
3) When you do take it out, give it a good "Italian Tune-up" - drive it on an empty back road for at least an hour. No cell phone use unless car stops dead and you need a ride/tow.
4) Change oil & filters every 6K miles; use Mobil 1 0W40.

(I don't abide by (2), but strictly abide by (1), (3), & (4). '95 993 has 87K miles on original clutch, tranny, and engine. Engine is dry as a bone - no leaks - and I get 3K miles/qt. Because of (2), think I'm on about my 5th set of front rotors.)

Chris, . I just signed up for Thunderhill Feb 26-27 so I'm psyched to try all the new mods out.

Steve, ah thanks. Are there any tricks to a quick, effective clean to the bottom of the car? I've picked up a bunch of stuff due to an OTE but I figure since I wash my car about 3 times a year and live in California, I should be pretty safe.

Jauder:

I use a variety of citrus-based cleaners and our smaller pressure washer hooked to the water heater. I am VERY careful how I use it,.....

Done carefully, the bottom side can literally look like new.

my quick thoughts in addition to above:

1) place trans in neutral and release clutch at traffic lights.
2) pause very slightly in neutral when shifting.
3) over maintain car with fluid changes -- engine and trans oil, brakes, clutch slave cylinder, power steering, all filters, etc.
4) if store car, make sure it is stored properly, plus take measures to avoid mice.
5) if have acid battery - check monthly battery area. once yearly wash area with baking soda.
6) if have cab keep top up overnight
7) don't swing doors past stoppers
8) Get to know a trusted tech/mechanic before you need service
9) check instrumentation after start up and regularly when driving
10) read Rennist and share your knowledge and experiences

HTML Code:
at 125+ when all of a sudden I got wipers swooshing across the glass

That is why I removed my wipers and motors...although it is a dedicated track car (actually removed for weight). Can't tell you how many times I have had the wipers running on the track before.

Gordon,
Thank you for helping hitch my car up to the Jeep 5.9.
