OK, good news... Gert will do 640 Euros (looks like $835) if we do 5-10 units. Plus shipping. I'm in for these. If a few more of you will chime in indicating you want the Porsche part, as opposed to Chris's CF pieces, I'll start another thread and we'll get it going.

 

i really like the look of the rs rockers. i have to say though that even at the discount rate of $835 they seem awfully expensive for what does not seem like a complicated thing to produce (although i realize that the research behind them might have been expensive). anyone else feel that way?

 

Yeah, especially when you consider that the stock US pieces are only $60 each from the dealer at full retail. Not sure why... guess this is the price we pay for our sick little obsession.

Chris' sideskirts sound good to me and I don't mind waiting . . . I may be cohabitating again with my car by the time he's finished so that would make it easier to spend the cash. (Although, I would like to hear of an approximate price range before making a firm commitment.)

Maybe it makes sense from a manufacturing process though- Molds for all this stuff are amortized through production numbers- if a mold for a rocker panel costs $12K and you amortize it across 12 thousand parts, your mold cost is 1$; if your RS rocker panel mold is essentially the same cost, $12k, and you only make a few parts, the per-part-cost goes way up! hence the $860- Now who can guess what I do for a living!

Has anyone approached MA SHAW about putting together a mold. I guess someone would need to donate a OEM set to make the origianl mold. I'm sure a CF piece would be more impact resistant but tje skirts would probably take no more abuse than the RS splitters.

Any thoughts.

 

Well I'm sure that if MA Shaw did it, that the parts would be fiberglass, no? And if that's the case, even if they sold them for say $500, you'd be in for another $400 to prep and paint. I'm not sure fiberglass would make much sense in light of the cost of OEM porsche plastic.

Sounds to me like Chris's CF side skirts are quite a ways from completion, so I'm doing the group buy on the Porsche skirts.

 

In principle, yes, but since they made, what? 1200 993 RS's? Plus some RSR's, GT2's and race cars.

So let's say total of 1600 cars with these side rockers.
Your $12000 mold cost in my opinion is very much on the high side but even if we use that figure, total mold cost for RS rockers would be about 15 bucks (($12000 x 2) /1600)...

 

GT2s don't use the side skirts of the RS.

So the number should be about 180 less, still not a big $$ molding cost though.

That's not a bad price. These things used to sell for $699, then the dollar tanked. Fiberglass would break in a few weeks-- the flexible skirts are the way to go. Just be aware, as some posters said, that the things tend to come loose and at some point you may have to secure them with zip ties or a bracket.

WHAT? I didn't read that in any of the posts above. Didn't somebody say that if/when the mounting tabs on the RS side skirts break that it doesn't matter since they're screwed in anyway?

 

They do fasten with screws at the front and back as well as where they meet the floor pan, but rely on the plastic clips (to some extent) to stay in place near the bottom of the doors, for the lack of a better land mark.
