When I went to change the oil temp. sensor on my Carrera last summer, I decided it was a good excuse to buy a set of Craftsman metric off-set box wrenches. When I got home from the 40-mile round trip to the Craftsman store, I discovered that the 19mm wrench I needed for the job was a factory defect and was perfectly round on the inside. Of course, they took it back, apologized and gave me a new one. But it was quite an aggravation.

I'll just throw this out here. I used to be a Snap-On dealer. Craftsman sells cheap chipping chrome pot metal tools. Snap-On has the best tools you can buy period. I could inquire about a group buy with my old contacts if there were anything in their catalog that you guys would want..... I wouldn't make any $$ off of it but if there were interest I'd like to help out.

question one: how do i get my hands on snap on tools? i have never seen one of there "trucks"...

question two: quality wise, regardless of price, how does snap on compares to facom?

Mooty, never heard of Facom. As far as not seeing any of the trucks? Every dealer has a list of customers or a route where he goes to their shops once a week or less often depending on the customer. He will fix any ratchet they need fixing right on his truck, replace broken wrenches or sockets right from the truck also. Most trucks are supposed to have $100K retail of tools on his truck at any time. A Snap-On dealer is invaluble to a successful auto shop.

Mooty, a do remember hearing about Facom when I was in the business though when I had my route I do not remember seeing one Facom tool ever. Probably hard to find and even harder to get repaired/warranteed. Mostly our competitors were Mac, Matco and to a lesser extent Crapsmen, Cornwell and S-K. There were some specialty tools that we would carry from Hazet as well. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Started the install on my Bilstein HD's tonight. I only broke two sockets I guess my first trip in the am will be to Sears and then to Anir's to borrow his tools

Hey Greg, just returned from getting my car at John's new shop. Got pretty google-eyed over a factory 993 GT2 sitting on the floor. Hmmm...

I just received a Snap-On and Facom shipment yesterday, and have got a pretty good collection going. The kids don't really need to go to college, do they? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> My wife returned the Crapsman tools today. Good riddance.

The Milwaukee 18V cordless impact wrench still hasn't arrived. Might come in handy if the Hazet sockets don't allow you to remove the top nuts.

Monique will be with the kids tomorrow, while I'm in Louisville. Feel free to raid the garage in my absence if you need anything. I'll help you on Sunday.

Your offer is very gracious, and I appreciate it. However, like most professionals, my time is very valuable to me, and I don't want to spend it running to Sears every weekend to exchange one broken tool for another that will likely eventually break. The problem isn't with the exchange policy - it's with the manufacturing QC of the tools themselves. I'll be the first to admit that my new $190 Snap-On torque wrench cost more than the $85 Craftsman model it replaced, but the difference in quality is literally night and day. If I must pay $190 to get a solid, heirloom-quality torque wrench, so be it.

And, some of the stuff at Sears is not that inexpensive. The fluorescent light that broke yesterday (within 1 minute of first using it) cost $40. It was housed in the cheapest plastic I've ever seen, and obviously had electrical components of a similar quality.

If I may be so bold, the positive Sears Craftsman brand reputation took many years to build. With Sears not having the best of times in recent years, I worry that this calculated move to cheaper quality parts will destroy one of the truly strong brand names out there, and hasten the end of Sears.

Hope I'm wrong.

You're right! It reminds me of when I went hunting for a Hi-8 camera and Sony loads EACH of their lower-end cameras with a single, but different, desirable feature. Strategy: consumer keeps looking "up" the line to eventually get what he wants, even if it comes with crap he doesn't. I went with the Sharp
Can't get rid of my existing Craftsman stuff though...too expensive to replace it all. Besides, if buy more tools, how am I ever going to afford PSS-9s....

Thanks for the offer of help. If I can borrow a couple of the "right" tools I should be done in no time. Your Hazet open sockets made the job easy.

I could have been 90% done with my project last night had I not had a tool problem. It is frustrating. My next purchase is a complete set of 1/2 sockets. 3/8 doesn't cut it on the big stuff IMO.

Final thought, it is great to have friends like you that will spend big $$ to have the right tools Kind of like saying the best boat you will ever have is your neighbors...
