Please note, though that even if you get a notice and check your own harness and find that it does not qualify, you should still visit the dealer and let him inspect it. This is the only way that Porsche can know how many of these vehicles are out there that may still have a problem. It will also keep you from getting notices in the future for the same thing, and will help keep Porsche's database updated as to how many of their cars are still in service and where.

FYI&gt;......Great info guys. I provided a copy of all the data on wiring harness thread/info base to my dealer just prior to installation. They were quite responsive to the extra info and the harness replacement went without a hitch or "spark"..... Kudo's to MidTown Imports in Pekin, IL. Parts were obtained within 2 weeks of assessment of the car and the work was done in a day and a half. Wonderful service........ ON THE ROAD AGAIN.....

I am glad to hear that you did not go to Isringhausen. My car has been sitting there for ONE MONTH now. Three days after taking it in - following an APPOINTMENT - they asked me to come and get the car, they did not have time to do it and no space to store it either. (I drive 110 miles one way !)
You are welcome there if you offer them ninety thousand dollars for a new car or a Chili Pepper truck (or whatever that new monster is called), but don't bring in your old piece of crap dating from 1995.
Last time I had it there for the 30K service they had not started working on it after three days.
A Chevy or Ford dealer would probably not do that to you.

Will definitely try out the Pekin place next time, have heard several good comments about it.

I work for a dealer, and have done several updates with no problems. It actually should give you piece of mind. Nice, new harness and your ready to roll!

First ot all, a big thank you to E.J and everyone else involved in the harness issue.
I had my wiring harness replaced two years ago (along with the alternator)and am now putting in for a reimbursement from Porsche.
It will be very interesting to see how long this procedure takes and how much of the $3130 labor and parts I will get back.
Has anyone else received a refund yet, and if so, what proportion of the total expense have they received?

One last bit of info on this...it is imperative that you take the car in to an authorized Porsche dealer / facility. I had my 1995 serviced at my "unauthorized" yet qualified Porsche facility before receiving the factory notice. I did not get the reimbursement when I sent in the information.

I had mine done. I obviously wasn't happy about. It ended up not being a big deal. I liked getting the bill and have it read "0" on it. The dealer said some people have valves attached to the exhaust manifold replaced since the engine is going to be out anyway. He said they rust. I don't if that's true. I didn't have him do mine.

This is great information. My 34K mile 1995 needs to have its harness replaced as advised by PorscheNA.
Has any thought been given to doing a survey online about this subject ?
I am not sure about the number of remaining cars that still require this service but I am sure that we would all like to know which dealers in which areas really delivered great service.
That info could certainly lead us making better choices for future endeavors - just a thought.
For the survey - dealer name and make it a 1-5 scale for now.
5 is best customer service
3 is $ fair and meets expectations
1 is worst customer service

I finally got around to calling my local dealer about having them check my harness. I told them it was replaced in September of 2000, and he said it would probably need replacing again. We had a discussion about part numbers and build dates. I told him my replacement harness has a recent build date, but he said that the new harnesses weren’t available until sometime in 2002. This is news to me. He also said there is a new part number that’s meant to avoid all this confusion with build dates, etc.

He also said it takes them 45 minutes to an hour to check the harness. I said I can pop the cover off the relay box and check the number in a couple of minutes. He said there are more things that they check. Does anybody have any clues what those things might be? Perhaps the rusty air valve? In other words, they’re checking for other things they can charge me for?

The dealer I called is Newport Auto, in Newport Beach, CA.

I’ll keep the board updated as I learn more info. Unfortunately, I can’t leave my car at the dealer for a couple of weeks. I’m getting ready to sell my other car, and if it sells before the new car comes into the dealer, I’ll need the 993 to get around.

In case anyone cares, I’m selling my 1993 Toyota SR5 Extra-Cab V6 4X4 and getting a 2003 4Runner, Sport Edition, V8, 4X4. The new ’03 4Runners are pretty hot. I know this is off topic, but I’m pretty excited!

The original work was done at my normal independent shop. From the time I submitted the papers to the time the check arrived was about three weeks.

I'd like to add my thanks to EJ and everyone as well. When the shop took the first harness off the shielding was just crumbling apart. They had heard of the problem, but mine was the first they had seen. <img border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" title="" src="graemlins/drink.gif" />

Just for the record. I have a '95 993 C2 Coupe. The car had 86,000 miles when the harness was first replaced and ~106,000 when the dealer replaced it.

’95 993</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Update: I took it in for inspection today. It only took about 15 minutes. They said I don’t need a new harness. I asked why are some people getting it replaced twice? As we all know, there are variants of the harness part number depending on your car. Some of these variants had good replacements in the 2000 time frame, while others were not. The “service writer” (commissioned salesperson) said it’s checked by VIN. Good harnesses were available for certain VIN’s and not for others.

FYI - The local (and only) Porsche dealer in Hong Kong contacted me about the wiring harness in my MY94 euro-spec 993. Harness was defective and replaced - no hassles, no charges.

I had mine checked last week. The dealer checked the VIN and my car was not included in the recall. He indicated that my car was built in Stuttgart and it occurred to him that the ones that they had been replacing were for cars built that were not built in Stuttgart.
