Exclamation Wiring Harness - 4 month wait!!!!

I called Jim Ellis Porsche this morning to set up an appointment for the wiring harness "Service Action Notice". I was told that the first available appointment was in mid FEBRUARY! I then called Porsche Customer Commitment who said basically "tough sh*t". My only option was to go to another dealer which is 140 miles away! I inquired about having it done at an independent shop and was told that I would only be reimbursed if the work was completed prior to the notice date of November 1.

Has anyone else been quoted this long of a delay to get an appointment to fix this problem??

Pissed off in Atlanta.

I would go somewhere else. YOu certainly would not be the first customer that Ellis pissed off and sent away. I know there are enough harnesses in the country for the majority of the swaps they need right now. Remember that not everyone is going to come right in for a swap.

I would speak with their service manager, or GM for dealership about the appointment. If no satisfaction, call PCNA. Because PCNA is based in Atlanta they should know the only Porsche dealer in the area, and should help get the parts.

I called my local dealer yesterday and was told to come in right away for the inspection. I went yesterday and was told that I need the replacement. They have one coming in today and I have an appointment for tomorrow for the job.

I think that your dealer is trying to discourage you from bringing in your car because they don't want to do the work.

I know when I first called my dealer, the first question was "Did you purchase the car here?".

I called Champion Porsche on Monday and they gave me an appointment for this thursday. I would definitly call your dealer and let them know that most Porsche dealers consider this important and want to do the inspection. Mike W

This is not a matter of parts availability. Jim Ellis claims that they are only scheduling 10 harness chageouts per month ("one every other day in their words"). That means that at least 40 cars are scheduled ahead of mine. I would assume that their motivation is to leave their schedule free to work on customers cars with more immediate (in their minds) problems.

PCNA Customer Commitment did suggest that I speak with the Service Manager who has yet to return my call.

I went to Jim Ellis after receiving my notification and they told me the "job" would take 1-2 days. My distinct impression from J.C., one of the "service advisor's" at Jim Ellis, is that they plan on replacing the harness. While I was there, the other sa was obviously on the phone with other 993 owners discussing the issue and requesting a time slot. In the short time I was talking with the s.a., I lost out on 3 time slots abd I saw a schedule sheet with nearly 10-15 names and dates for the repair. It might be possible they are only doing 1-2 a week.

Based on my conversation with them I agree that they plan on replacing the harness on all cars that get a notice. They will not just inspect and declare it OK if they don't see a problem. Too much liability I assume.

I called my local dealership - Sonnen Porsche. The lady checked my VIN # against a list and indicated that my car was not on the recall list. She also indicated that the recall was limited to 1995 and 1996 MY cars.

Does this sound right to you guys? I thought the recall was on ALL 993s. I'm being a tad paranoid but it appears from this thread that dealers are less than enthusiastic about doing this inspection/fix and I want to make sure I'm not being blown off.

Recall W301 is for certain 1995 and 1996 model year 993s. (I have heard that it is all 1995 cars, the first 2 - 3,000 1996s and some of the 1996 Turbos.) No 97 or 98 MY cars are effected.

If the last 4 digits of your VIN end in 1902 for coupes for 1155 of cabs or 5273 for Targas OR LOWER (in other words if you last 4 digits are lower than these) then you need to get checked. Turbos have different numbers, so if you have one, let us know.

Wow, tells me there are a lot of 993 owners that don't frequent Rennlist. Puts it all in perspective.

E.J.,

My last 4 digits for my 95 CAB are 2346 (12/94) and I still haven't received the letter yet which is consistent with what you mentioned. But my part number is ended with 05 and Customer Commitment said mine is affected . I didn't call the dealer since I hadn't decided which one to go to.

I would take it to the one you are most comfortable with as you are definately affected. We are going to find that the majority of 1995 North American cars have the affected VIN number and will probably need a replacement harness. The more I think about it, I bet the only reason that PCNA calls for the part number check is to make sure that the previous owner didn't have it changed out already on their own and the current owner not know it.

Called up PCNA; they told me my car was affected. Then whe I got home found the recall notice in my mailbox.

Called up my local dealer to get the car checked, got a Wed. appointment. Surprisingly, I am the first one calling them re this issue; they haven't done a repair yet! This isn't a fly-by-night operation; they have been the premier dealer here in Pittsburgh for over 25 years.

Tried asking them if I could just give them the number off the harness; they said no - they have to see the car. They did ask "do you need anything else done?" (trying to drum up business, I guess).

We shall see what happens.
