Subframe damage + mount questions
In the process of installing my new suspension, my mechanic discovered that the driver's side subframe was damaged. The piece that is broken is the small tab where the front crossbar bolts on, just behind the jack point. In fact, it looks like someone used [b]it[/it] as the jack point, causing it to snap. It looks like it's been broken for some time - the metal is worn where the two cracked pieces have been rubbing, and some evidence of salt corrosion on the cracked surfaces from it's time up north (two owners ago).
My mechanic says he can weld the tab back on, as it's not as highly stressed as other points on the subframe. He's got a good reputation as a welder as well.
Anyone have any thoughts on the safety of this plan?
I guess if nothing else, this would be a good opportunity to replace rubber subframe mounts with solid ones. Anyone done that on a street car?

Hi:
As long as the metal where that tab attaches to the body is not distorted, this sounds OK to me. If the area is prepared and welded properly, you should be OK.
Its all in the execution,...
I'd strongly advise that you do NOT replace the rubber mounts with solid ones (monoballs) unless this is a race car.
