Default Sticking Clutch

Hi,

After my 1997 993 CAB sat for several days, when I pushed in the clutch it seemed to stick about three inches from the floor, being smooth the rest of the way and smooth on the was out. Is the linkage hydraulic or mechanical? Have others seen the same situation?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Petare,

This seems to be quite a common problem. If you do a search you'll find lots of threads on this.

Cheers,

David

A plethora of posts, even last week. I'm still looking for any takers on my question about ATE Super Blue having any link to this, as stated on PCA.org.

Yes, your clutch actuation system is hydraulic. Bleeding the system along with lubricating the pedal assy. is where most people start when this happens, which is fairly common with the 964 and 993.

Try this first, then go from there..

John, my car came with the famous sticky clutch pedal when I got it 2 years ago. Have since changed to ATE Super Blue, lubed pedal cluster, flushed system last year to no avail. I just finished a complete makeover, ie new clutch slave cylinder (what a royal PITA it is to change that one!), new master cylinder and new kinematic lever. Extreme Clutch Makeover, so to speak First impressions are really promising, but the car is still off the ground and I have not had the chance to test it out yet!

Ahh....sounds like a lot of fun...I'm going to try to change the slave & hoses myself next weekend, we'll see if it works.

Did you have the kinematic lever updated?

It all started with me getting a new slave cylinder. While I was at it I got a new updated kinematic lever. And since getting the pedal cluster out is quite messy (at least for me it was - wiping ATE Super Blue from the inside of the car is not one of my top ten best moments in the car) I took my time. And found that the master cylinder was not looking top notch anymore. Off to the local OPC to get a new one of those... Hot tip: getting the driver's seat out of the way helped a little. The work position in there is still quite interesting: head jammed under the wheel, no place for the arms, hard to see where to apply tools, nowhere to put the light you so badly need in there etc. All in all, another lovely day at the garage

I did not change the hydraulic lines. With my luck, I almost expect them to go bad so I can have the doubtful pleasure of doing this all over again

I did of course misalign the slave cylinder when mounting it so I had to redo that bit. Twice. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, as they say. Good luck with your project! I can of course post updated comments later on this season when the weather improves and the car can come out of its hiding place.

Another thing I failed to mention is the condition of the hydraulic soft hose that connects at the slave cylinder. I replaced mine only because of age. Although, on other makes of cars, I have seen rubber brake hoses look fine on the outside, but found them to be swelling (and degrading) shut internally, therefore limiting or restricting fluid flow. Now under pressure, when the clutch is depressed, a restricted hose may not show signs of issue, but release is just pressure plate spring pressure and may delay full pedal return. Who knows..just a theory

I am hoping its just the slave and replacing the hose too as it appears to be original. Wouldn't want to do it 2X. I hope there isn't a problem with the master...starting easy then working my way up...

thanks

I cannot offer what the real problem is - but if you determine it is a clutch master cylinder, I have a brand new one I can sell you.

Don't leave us hanging...what did you try and how did it work? I'm hoping to get to my hose (hehehe) and slave cylinder replacement tomorrow/Monday.

Changing out the slave cylinder was indeed a PIA. I found it easiest to do while laying directly under the driver's rear disc brake, as if I were in an automotive-themed Bond movie and the SPECTOR was having me killed by disc-brake-vivisection! From that position I could hold a wrench in my left hand AND see what I was doing by looking through the suspension links. This job can be done in 20 degrees, but it isn't any more fun!

I also changed out my old hose. The old one was manu dated 4/94 but appeared in great condition on the outside. I changed it anyway for good measure. Besides, what am I going to do with a spare line?

I bled it thoroughly with fresh gold ATE. Now the lever is even stickier (i suspect the old slave was actually damping some of the sticking action?). In any event, I've now tried the P-car master cylinder lube and replacing/bleeding the slave. THe car is going in for the wiring recall soon so I'm thinking the next step is to let the dealer do the lever update.
