Pirelli tire question

The PO of my car had Conti sports on the front and rather new Pirelli PZero 285 . The fronts are worn and I have read the handling of the car is effected with different types of tires. I read on Tire Rack’s web site the difference between the Direzionale and the Asimmetrico fronts with regard to we traction. My question to is does any one have experience with the two different set ups using the Pirellis? I know the Pirellis are suppose to be engineered to work together it just seems strange that using the Direzionales wouldn’t result in the same ill handling as using two different manufacturers with different tread patterns. Any suggestions on Asimmetrico vs. Direzionale fronts?

I had a set of front direc. and rear asimm. before and I think the only difference between all 4 asimm. is in heavy rainy day the former would handle a bit better. But what do I really know.... I used them up before I know it and changed to Dunlops.

The simplest thing would be to match the "N" # on the pirellis all around. For a C2 I think Dir should be up front and asym in the rear. For AWD, asym all around. My C2 with N3 asym in front and N2 asym in the rear handled queerly until I place N2 dir up front. Bill Z

Except for the Boxster on which, it is a mixed set.

You're correct, I keep confusing them with the 996

I don't doubt what you say; however, my experience is in replacing tires and last time I checked at Tire Rack, you could not get matching N #'s for OEM sized 17" Pirellis without mixing Dir and Asym. That may not be the case any longer. FWIW. Bill Z

All you have to do is look here:
Tire Specs for Pirelli PZero System Direzionale,PZero System Asimmetrico
You will see that the N-spec tires can be had with any combination you wish.

Thanks. That is certainly easier then straining my eyes with the magazine ad. Maybe I'm missing something, but it is my understanding that different N #'s shouldn't be mixed and the only way I can see to replace 205/50 17 fronts and 255/40 17 rears with symetrical N's is to go with dir/asym, both N2's. There is really no harm in mixing N numbers. The differences are so minor that they are hardly noticeable if at all.

The only reason you cannot find the fronts with N2 and the rears with N1 is because they are sold-out. I suggest you call Tire Rack to see if a set can be located in one of their warehouses or you can look for a set at another tire vendor.
