To complete the story, I replaced the alternator using the wonderfully helpful photo instructions from Robin at p-car.com. Tested the voltage across the battery, looked good. Took it for a test drive, problem solved. No dimming all the way to red line.
I'm back in business. Thanks to all who provided suggested and data points.
