Is there 1 car that combines a 911 with a 740i BMW?

What kind of people can fit in the back of any 911? Your clients must be jockeys or dwarfs.

Whoahhhh - you mean people can actually fit into the back of a 996? I can't believe it. Clients? I think I've struck gold here. I'm not in love with the looks of the 996, but if people can actually fit into it without being the hunchbacks of Notre Dame, I need to check this car out! Then I could sell my beloved 88 911 with mediocre A/C, still be driving a 911, (996 - yuck, but...a big back seat?!?), have great working A/C, get rid of the 740i, please my wife, have friends sitting in the back seat now and then...
Wait a minute - how in the heck could normal size people willing sit in the back of a 996? For a longish 40 minute trip downtown to DC? For a trip to the beach 4 hours away? I'm sitting here in major disbelief. I need to go take a test drive a 996 and let the salesman drive. I'M the one that needs to sit in the back to check it out for myself.
About the Audi V8, I've always sort of liked it's looks, and sort of not. Plus, I've heard it's not such a great idea to buy an aluminum car as it's deathly expensive to fix after an accident. Sort of liking it's looks though wouldn't really move me to buy one...
And as for the 528i idea or a 540i... I'm just not in love with the styling and it seems like a downgrade to trade out of my E38 740i and 911 to a.... 528i!? Nahhh, that wouldn't do either.
Off to the dealer to crunch into that spacious back seat of the 996!

I have a feeling that there is something completely different happening here. How many people do you know that would "kill" to get a ride in a 911 or a Porsche in general??? I remember back in 1992 when i had the oportunity to ride in an F40 I could barely fit on the bucket seat ,barely fit at all in the cockpit on the right side. Did I complain? LOL Noooo... I wanted more and more!!! Was it comfortable? who cares! It was still one of the most amazing moments of my life. So the same could be said propably for the majority of the people who have a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to ride in a Porsche. Now if you have to carry "wheelchair crowd" well maybe you are going to run into a problem!
Dont know if that makes sence but it could be an explanation of why people can find the back seat comfy. Also something else to consider is your height! If my wife drives (she is 5.2) then there is actualy space behind her for a person!!!
Finally a convertible on sunny days has infinate more headroom! Something to think as well!!!

They must have been laying across the seats, ontop of one another. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I remember talking to someone about the "ride and drive" on the 996. They spent the week in California; some track can't remember which one.
Any way, they tested 993 vs. 996 over the course of the week. I remember drilling him on the 996 experience, I haven't seen one at the time, nor have they been released.
The only thing that stuck in my mind was that he claimed "finally a 911 that adults can sit in the back seat of" and that "Porsche is going to sell the S**T out of these things". Personaly, I would prefer a 924 turbo leaking oil.

For an involving drive with rear seats and real character I'd look at the Audi ur-quattro. The original 80's icon is a classic, and the latest 20 valve incarnation is a fabulous driving machine developed and refined for over 12 years from the start of production. And still only just over 3000 of them were (hand-) built in all those years. Quick, near invincible grip from the AWD and with every day practicality. Your budget allows you to buy the very best. And there are several dedicated quattro suppliers for performance and handling mods if you are so inclined.
I sold my '83 for the 993 and wouldn't trade back, but faced with a rear seats dilemma that's the car I would go for.

Uhhhh, trading my 740i and 911 for a ... 83 Audi Quattro? Hmmmm - I'll have to think about that one.
I have an appt with fate today at my local Porsche stealer in Rockville Md to look at a 996 with those huge back seats. Personally, I can't believe they are big enough for normal size passengers but I trust your opinions. I actually saw a (don't laugh) triple black 996 cab today at the gym and it looked pretty darn neck-snapping hot. I do have a predilection towards the 993 based on looks looks looks, but I guess I should be open to the 996, plastic part interior and all.
It's just that this new car had GOT to be worthwhile, I mean just... HOT, for me to give up my current two cars. The best part is that I'd get my garage spot back in that I wouldn't have to park one of my cars on the driveway.
As for the above comment about being the man of the house and just buying the C4S anyway AND keeping the 740i (putting us in debt that she's uncomfortable with - hell, I'm not uncomfortable with it at all, but it's not about ME), that just wouldn't be good for marital relations!!! I know these things. You'd have to know my wife. Just not a good idea.

One problem with your 996 plan - unless you get a 99 coupe, you're going to blow the $40k budget by a pretty wide margin. Even with a 99 coupe, you're looking at $45k or so.

Hi Steve,
I did get your attention . All I'm trying to do is to think out of the box for a bit. Some modern cars out there that are so "good" they are a bit sterile. Not the 911 with it's character and driving dynamics, and there are a few more cars like that. I happen to think the ur-quattro is one of them. Oh and I was suggesting you get a '92 with a nicely tuned 2.5 litre Nothelle upgrade
Enjoy <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Three Wheelin'
Well, we call my 500E the 4 door 911. It's a flared, lowered, 300+ HP sedan that Porsche built for MB. They also did some of the design work. They brought about 400 a year into the US in '92, '93 & '94 @ $ 80k a pop. It has kind of a cult following among the MB guys & some of them even see track use (Not mine, that's what Porsches are for). Here's an info link:

They are great cars, hold value since they are collectible & it's fun smoking Z/28s & Mustangs in a 4 door
Jay Walker
'97 Super Cup
'90 964 widebody
'93 MB 500E
'64 GTO (got to have some American muscle)

You know Jay, you're not the only one to think that. I think the 55 series AMG cars are way to civilized. Bruce McCaw (Former CART team owner and vintage car racer) agrees with me and you. He said no way would he drive an E55, but his 500E is his daily driver. He could drive any car he wants (he owns about 150 cars total) and he picks the 500E for the daily grind. Must say something.
What can you get an 500E for now a days?

Thanks again for more combo car replacement ideas... unfortunately, I guess I'd prefer to just keep my 95 740i which is now worth all of $10,500 to the "stealer" or $13,500 retail vs the purchase price of $29500 - $40000 for a used 93-94 E500 MB according to cars.com. I went to my local BMW dealer 2 days ago to see what they'd give me on a trade to a newer 740i or 540i sport and $10,500 is all I'd get!
I also checked into buying a 99 996 with that big back seat I'd heard about from someone's post above and the dealer laughed and said, "you wouldn't find anyone I know willing to sit in the back seat. Maybe a child, but that's it." I told him that I'd heard client's might be able to fit there according to some gents I'd talked to, and he just laughed and said NO WAY.
Time to go to the Mercedes dealer and try that used 99 older body style CL500 coupe, but I think I'm coming up dry here with my idea of finding a replacement to take me out of the 88 911 and the 95 740i. I'm getting the feeling that I might be better just holding my position for another 3 years till I can afford to upgrade more easily to the 96/97 C4S and just be happy to own my "classic" 88 for a long while longer. I wish money grew on trees!
Steve
95 740i 104k mint, now apparantly worth nothing!
99 Jag XK8 her's, our current money bleed <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Burning Brakes
Steve - in my process of picking up an Audi A8L for my parents one of the places I visited was HBL (although I personally wouldn't do business with them). They have a CL600 on the lot, the one with the V12. If you have not driven one, go drive that thing. You will not believe it.
