I am new to the forum, and have aquired my 993 C2 Tip without a cd player!
I have been reading the posts for a while now on upgrades but really am none the wiser as to what to do.
Being a Porsche fanatic I really want quality, but cant find a way to decide which is the best audio kit for my 993. | only require a unit in the first instance and will upgrade the speakers etc. later.
I have the stock din connect poking through the vacant hole, and want something I can connect to get me going but want to start heading in the right direction from the off.
I know of Nakamichi from my earlier days and they appear to be the best quality but are very expensive, I would need to ship one from a supplier a good distance away, and the general lack of backup/aftersales here in the uk is very concerning.
I notice some of you guys recommend the alpine 9835 and I would be open to suggestions of others.
Please could someone point me in the right direction.

Why not stay with a stock Porsche head unit with a CD player, it will look the best and with the engine running the possible increase in sound quality from a different unit should be minimal. Unless the Porsche piece is far more expensive, I would buy this and if you must spend money on a stereo, improve the speakers and the amplifier.

I had a look at a few and finally decided on the Alpine with 4*60w. Have been very pleased with it.
Then I replaced the rear speakers. Next I want to replace the front.

As I own a cab, I had to do a total re-do to hear the stereo above 60mph. I put an Alpine CDA 9820xm in mine. It's the only Alpine currently with the XM tuner built in (ie. no separate device needed). I'm running it with 8" JL Audio subs in the back, 6.5 MB Quart components in the doors, Focal 4" Coaxials in the back and an Audison amp underneath the passenger seat.
I love the Alpine unit.

Old thread but I need the help. Just bought the Nak CD400. How do you get the old head unit out of a 930? Its like its wedged in there real good and tight. Do you push? Pull? Unscrew something? lift a lever? I took a good look at it, gave up, and said WTF.

Alpine 9835R (Head unit)
Soundstream Van Gogh 500.4 (amp)
Focal 165K2P (Front)
Boston 120x (Rear)
Infinity (Sub)
Dynamat isolation in the front doors.
If you install this you won't believe your ears!!
Just changing a head unit isn't enough because the standard speakers are crap (Paper Nokia's
)

Been through this before as well. Nakamichi makes a very nice stereo, with great sound quality, and they look great in the 993 dash. On the downside, they don't have the greatest history on reliability.
Given that you said you would have to have one shipped from far way, and are concerned with post-sale support, I'd probably avoid the Nak unit.
I ended up with a Clarion, which I originally thought looked ok in the dash. The more I look at it, the more I want a Becker Monza (Plays MP3.)

Today I went down the Pioneer trail DEH-3730MP. Being very low profile, discrete and cheap I thought this fits pretty well into the classic dash. The Nakamischi looks much nicer, almost stock in fact, but the aftersales is not terrific from what I read here on Rennlist. An other option was a second hand Becker unit but they still fetch around 250 euro on ebay with also some reliability problems. I've put them herebelow so you can compare.

Alpine 9835....100%. I have [knock on wood] NEVER had problems with any of my Alpine units, and the 9835 allows you to hook up XM Radio [a MUST in GA because our radio SUCKS], an iPod that can be controlled directly from the head unit, and you can change the backlight color to match the rest of the lighting....

I installed a Nakamichi CD400 when they first came out, the CD sound is great, but mine has a skipping problem.....unfortunately that's related to the the stiffness of my PSS9 settings (mid). If I knew that now, I would of used a different CD player.

i would get whatever is the better stereo headunit. Which im sure is the alpine.
The alpine does not look "in bad taste" or like a video game, so id get that.
I think it is silly to be obcessed about trying to imitate the stock stereo look at the expense of not getting the head unit you really want. That said, dont buy a video game head unit, but all those shown here look nice and go with the interior.

Installed the Nak CD400 this weekend with some help. Looks great and the sound quality over the original Blau Reno is night and day. Looks absolutely perfect in the car.
The install was a total PITA though. The original blau connectors dont match up with the ones supplied with the Nak. Had to completely redo everything. Its absolutely criminal that there is NOT a standard out there where you just have a "hot shoe" with all your speaker connections, attenna, power, ground, and such in one single mass connector and you plug it into the back of each unit. Some people running more speakers just have more wires that lead to home runs that are accounted for in the universal connector.
Makes absolutely no sense from a practicality standpoint.
