Post Comming Soon Fabspeed SuperCup review

Ok Gang,
You did not think I was going to stop with the chip upgrade from Rennsport Systems...Noooo. I picked up a set of early model Fabspeed Supercups and will be bolting them on to the Track Tool aka 993 Cab for a 4 day track fest at Road America this Labor Day weekend. I am going to drive to the track baffles out (150 miles) top up and down (weather permitting) and baffles in on the way home. Going to run the track baffles in and out. I have a pretty good base line from last week (2.46 laps) I will report on lap times, seat dyno, sound ect.
If anyone has any other data they would like me to sample please let me know. I will post my finding on Tues.

Well, for sound I can already say how they are:

With baffles, they're really loud and IMO too low tone,
w/out baffles (I use them w/out), they're even louder, and tone is better. After 4000 rpm, car scream like Porsche should!

Too loud & booming for most, I'd say but I like em!

It will be interesting to hear your test results next week!

Finn,
I was thinking about a pair of Supercups so I could better hear my engine at DEs. How long does it take to install...easy or hard? Would it be realistic to swap them in and out periodically?

After installing Supercups I drove my 993 on a 2000 mile road trip without incerts. Love the sound. I installed the incerts and did not like the tone so I trashed the incerts.

Jeff,

It really is easy, I did it without even jacking the car up (drove rear wheels on a speedhump in our carage). Took less than an hour, now it would probably take something like 30 min.

I think it's realistic to swap them every now and then if you want to but like Bill, I love the sound (and you really need to take those baffles out) so I have them on always.

I do have ear plugs in my car , just in case if I have to drive long period of time b-ween 2500 - 3000 rpms. Although I haven't used them yet (maybe they're for wife?), I usually tend to drive over 3000 rpm when I'm cruising in highway.

Aww, you're changing your exhaust sound? Man, I loved the way that thing was screaming at Gingerman. Speaking of which, your hawg made the cover of the local PCA rag. Looks cool!

I won't be at RA, but I'm sure I'll see you around.

Thanks Joey/E.J.
The old sound is from Robin Sun's RSR mufflers with the motor sound pkg.( www.p-car.com )I dont know if his set up will fit your 964... I cant wait to hear the Supercups at speed! I hope I dont get black flagged at RA for noise violation!

Hi its Joe @ Fabspeed Motorsport. Posted as an informational response only:

You will never ever get black flagged due to noise with our SUPERCUP 993 exhaust. We have sold 100s upon 100s of Supercup exhaust systems to street enthusiasts and racers worldwide.

At Lime Rock park in Connecticut you will often see 4-6 993s "going nose to tail down the hill" with the Supercup exhaust and the DB limit is only 86DB @ Lime Rock. The 993s with Supercup exhaust and CUP airbox never get flagged with the baffles out. Many factory Supercup racecar owners have even installed our Supercup systems to attenuate the sound for Lime Rock whilst not hurting power.

The only time the exhaust can get very loud is when you install catbypass pipes and use these inconjunction to the Supercup exhaust.......this is now loud, extremely light, powerful and PURE RACing. Still there are those that choose to drive the 993 on the street & racetrack with this set-up........as its "rock-music" to many people. Choices for everyone. Revised quiter Supercup debuting soon.
Have a great day

I recall hearing about someone getting black-flagged at Laguna-Seca. I forget the noise limit that day, but I recall he was tagged at about 92 or 93db.

I remember an instructor saying that the noise limit at Laguna Seca is 92db, and that they STRICTLY enforce it...FYI, FWIW.

Lime Rock is alot tougher on DBs than any other track in North America. I have never ever had a customer get black flagged at Laguna with any of our Fabspeed exhaust systems. Perhaps they will get flagged by their "wives" for the big 'grins' they have for blasting around making music on such a great racetrack -never been out there...saw it many times on the tele!

Never ever had a problem with baffles in at RA in many many laps there. Baffles out shouldn't be a problem either. I ran baffles in at Laguna on a tight sound day..but I used the time honored method of lifting or short shifting at the sound meter between turns 5 and 6. That works every time! Love that sound!

I heard the same car Kim did this weekend (#76) & thought it sounded AWESOME! Deep, throaty almost V-8 like.

The owner said he was black flagged for sound at Laguna Seca however with that exhaust and that it was not technically CA street legal. That said, he said he didn't really care & compared to a lot of Harleys it was quiet.

FWIW I was told at a GreenFlag event that Laguna has a 92db limit for approved motorsport events. For non-motorsport events (not sure what they would be...concerts?) they have a 90 db limit. That weekend we drove under the 90db limit because it was added to the schedule at the last minute.
