Post Importing a non US spec.993

I'm seriously considering bringing my 96 4S with me when I return to the US at the end of the year. I know it may not be the most financial savy thing to do but i've spent money converting it to a TT and will never recover from the expense. My understanding is that it must be imported thru a legal importer. Anyone know who these people are and their contacts? Any experience with them would be helpful. I'm sure this has been asked before but couldn't find anything in the archives.

Thanks

Chuck
No personal knowledge, but here are some past threads:

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000080" target="_blank">Importing 911 from Europe </a> contains <a href="http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/" target="_blank">link to NHTSA Vehicle Importation Regulations</a>

There are a few others, but I think these will get you started. Looks like it's not too practical.

Chuck, back to Dan's point, it is not very practical, I tried it myself and finally dropped the idea due to many different opinions and cost estimates. It would be interesting to post it here if you ever find out the procedure and cost.
On another note, financially it should make sense to ship it, in light of the price difference between the Gulf and the US. If you end up wanting to sell it B4 you go, please send me the details by email, I could be interested.
Good Luck. Jean

My USA spec'ed car recently returned to the state's courtesy of Lufthansa Cargo and California's LAX airport last week. The US Customs department at LAX was easy enough with me acting on my own behalf, though this spoke in the import wheel is not for the faint of heart. -These Customs guy's could wreck your day.
As a work relocation had our US spec'ed cars going to Germany, an opportunity emerged of having Porsche's, Werk 1, have their hand at a few enhancements such as, Euro bumpers F & R, G-50/21-2 gearbox, ROW M030 suspension and a few TUV requirements, e.g., the rear fog light. All is good however now its time to come home.

On second thought, e-mail me privately and we'll spare the Rennlist the bandwidth.
I'd encourage you to find a reputable broker as suggested elsewhere in the thread and bring the C4Stt here to the states. A tt enhancement experience, now there's a story! ... I'm all ears.

I just remembered- At our local Porsche dealership the technical foreman is importing a 968 Club Sport from Germany. As we speak the car is in LA waiting for EPA/DOT certification, et cetera. I'll ask if he would share his Broker contact. An additional data point couldn't hurt?

I don't recall the 968CS being sold here in the states although its a 968 variant just the same. So what are the EPA/DOT certification hoops to jump through??

I seem to remember reading (Autoweek? Road & Track?) that while an imported car doesn't have to meet all of the body safety standards as a US-certified car, it MUST meet all of the emission standards. So, you might have to swap out the engine and entire fuel train (emissions-proof fuel tank, etc.). Also, since gear ratios effect emissions, might have to swap out the tranny for a US model.

Sell the sucker and buy a car when you're back in the USA.

Want more stuff to turn your stomach? READ!
