John,

I know that Boxter and 996 computers can easily be switched between imperial and metric modes.

The 964 Rev counter is very similar if not identical to the 993 so if the 964 one can be switched I'm sure the 993 can as well. As you say, if anyones gonna know it will be Adrian.

I have Emailed Adrian and he came up with the following which answers the question.

" You can only convert from mph to kph by changing the speedo or trip
computer. The calculations are actually carried out inside the individual
units. They are just calibrated differently inside. The speed input from the
wheel speed sensors is the same.
If you changed the trip computer this should work and give you some mph
readouts. Make sure you get a normally aspirated version and not a Turbo
version because this will defeat the purpose of doing things because the
Turbo one is missing some functions."

I would start hunting for a second hand UK computer before the prices start rising!

Cheers
Tim.

Good work Tim,

What is your reading of Adrian's answer.... "If you changed the trip computer this should work and give you some mph readouts."

Is he saying that the trip computer is part of the Rev counter unit or not? My guess is that it is, and therefore we need a complete UK spec Rev counter.

Yes, we better keep quiet about this until we've both aquired new units

I agree that you need a complete unit. As we know the wheel sensors are the same I think we can assume that the mph based readouts will be OK. If the fuelling sensors are the same on all cars hopefully the other readouts will work as well.

I still think I will try and purchase a second hand unit on the basis of being able to return it if there is a problem.

Anyone know how much a new unit costs just as a starting point?

Cheers
Tim.

Did anyone succeed with this experiment??
Or come up with a better solution?

I haven't got my hands on a MPH rev counter/computer yet BUT I did try to pull out the old one and failed.

The rev counter fouls the steering column surround. It looks like you have to remove this surround and possibly the steering wheel to get it out!

Anyone sucessfully remove the rev counter, if so what else need to come off?

Tim,

Why not just have the speedo face changed? I've just had it done on my LHD '94 993 by a company called Reap Automotive Developments (you'll find their ad in 911 & Porsche World). For approximately £100 they'll replace the KPH speed markings with MPH but will mark the odometer in KM. The benefits are that the original speedo (and hence history) are retained whilst being able to comfortably see you're speed in MPH. I had this done on my previous 964 Turbo II as well and can totally recommend it as a relatively cheap solution. Of course if you want to see MPH on the digital readout then that's another thing ...

Mark,

Yes you do need to remove the wheel and column shrouds which I have done to get the tach out to replace the backlighting in the computer - it is pretty simple lots of info in the archives.Only pain is that you have to get the airbag light reset.

Biovox,

With regard to getting the face redone by REAP I have considered this and heard really good reports of their work. However I still like the idea of a fully functional MPH computer - doing it is still on my list though!
