Post Shifting and revs

I have owned my car for several months now and have settled into it nicely. I would like a few opinions on what kind of revs you like to drive in. For instance I really enjoy 5000 to 6000 while roaming the backroads along with a lot of second to third redline shifts. While on the highway I generally wont shift past fourth, I prefer 5000 to 6000 at this point. Is this type of driving ok on these cars as I suspect it is? How do you usually drive?

Which gear you choose is 95% personal preference. Try different gears for different situations to see which suits your driving style. To your point, the car isn't sweating at these revs, although I don't see the need to keep it in fourth for highway driving. If you're not accelerating, driving in 5th or 6th would lower revs and wear, although you'll find the car has no acceleration in 6th if you want to pass.

In california, where driving speeds are sometimes averaging between 60 and 80 mph on the freeway, I find that 5th gear is fine. If I have some open road and go beyond 80mph I like to use 6th gear. If I see someone playing with me (mustangs, blown out acura's, etc) I drop down to 3rd or 4th in anticipation of a quick move. I use 4th from 70-75mph and above and 3rd for 55 to 70mph and above.

Of course I stop at around 90 to 100 mph and let the foolish go on by after they feel bad for missing the jump Mostly mustang I might add

I agree w/Kery and Vinney. With these new cars cruising in a higher gear saves wear. I always think back to Road & Tracks old road tests that showed engine revs per mile which I equate to longivety. I downshift for anything but very light acceleraton when in 4th thru 6th. To put it another way, I like to save/bank my cruising revs for having fun which, as your post indicates, is frequent!

My $.02
I try to keep ~3500 rpm's. While low revs may save "wear and tear" a quick read of a recent carbon build-up post would indicate trying to maintain a minimum rpm level.

Usually keep betweetn 3500 and 4000 on surface streets and have a lot of fun pushing 2nd into the 5's. Last night on the way home (sepulveda near LAX) I was having some fun with a guy in an early 911. We weren't driving crazy, but just winding up the rpms...love having the power on tap and keep in a lower gear rather than higher and lugging. BTW, with a couple thousand miles under their belt, the RSR mufflers are growling more and more! Love the sound at about 5k! Robin is the man...best $400 ever spent!
