I am sticking with the 17" wheels because with the taller sidewall, you will get more 'warning' when at the edge of adhesion. I feel this can be a great learning tool. I know a shorter side wall will (theoretically) handle better as there is less compliance in the tires, but am afraid of minimizing the 'warning' when about to lose grip.

Until I get more experience at DE's etc., I need all the warning I can get....

Well maybe I'll buy a set of 17"Cup wheels for the track and install DE tires.

What do you think?

My car came with the stock 17's and when I bought 18" speedlines I used the stock 17's for the track with Sport Cups on.The factory stock 17 cups are nice, strong and light. I use 225/45/17 and 255/40/17 sizes on the stock 17's and they work very well on the track.

The best upgrade to spend your money on before the dedicated tires is a quality coilover suspension system.

Finally Chris said it right that the 17's will be more forgiving till you learn the car and get a lot of seat time on the track. Most people here will advise to learn the car on street tires first and then move to R's. I do not disagree with them.

The other well-discussed approach is to NOT buy R-compound tires at all until you've had a few track weekends under your belt. While the exact number of weekends on street tires is arguable, pretty much everyone agrees that your learning curve will be steeper if you run w. street tires first, switch to R-compound later.

I also have 17" cups with Michelin Sport Cup tyres (225 & 255).
They work well, IMO and I have no 'rush' to go bigger but I have to admit I've been looking for 18"s...

Thanks all for your help.

For those of you with C4Ss, what do you use on the track? I'll search right now, so feel free not to answer! Just had to jot down my thought before it was gone. Senior moments come often.

I did it backwards.
When I bought my car it needed tires, so I re-shod the 17" cup wheels that came with the car with street tires, Potenza S-02A N4.

I wanted 18" wheels, so I bought some twist wheels from a fellow Rennlister, and put my track tires on those, Pirelli P Zero Corsa.

The ultimate plan is to swap the wheels, 18" for street, 17" for track. I'll have to wait until the street tires are worn, I can't just toss them, maybe after another set of track tires.

My motivations are; 18"s look nicer to me on a street car, 17" track tires are cheaper.

From my limited experience (9 DEs ?) I feel that the Kumho Ecsta V700 I've been running actually gives more warning, more gradual break away than any street tire I ever put on the track, Goodyear, Bridgestone. I can't wait to try the Pirellis.

I searched, and am confused. Someone said they used 17s on a C4S? I thought they could not fit?

For basic, beginning DE use, prior to doing the M030 or PSS9 thing, and prior to R-compound tires, just to learn how to drive the car well, what do I need? I assume if the car is stock, and I have it checked out for an event, brakes, good rubber (after much research I chose S03s. We'll see how they do), etc, I can just go stock, no?

Thanks.

Chuck,

That's what I'm doing 18" for street, 17" for track, works well & like you said, is little cheaper.

Here is my local PCA region's website and there is a set of Kinesis wheels for a wide body 993. 9's and 11's.

Stedge- yes I would go stock. I did for the first year or so. The first thing I upgraded were the brake pads and fluid- and it's kind of been downhill, so to speak, ever since.

Don't try Hoosier's. Ever. Just say no.

thanks. Yeah, I just had the brake fluid changed (to good stuff) and pads are good. Didn't put pagid or anything like that on yet, just stock. New tires due in a day or 2. So I guess I'll have to go have some fun!

Thanks, again.
