OK,.....This is the time when I get under the car and jumper the starter solenoid to see if the engine will crank.

This tells me if the starter/solenoid are OK and whether the battery cables and grounds in the rear are OK. After that, I look at the ignition switch.

Thanks,

It may also just be that the microswitch on the clutch pedal has gone bad. This will stop the car from starting and will look like the symptoms you are describing. I had a cab in the shop this week that had to come in on a flatbed for that reason. The owner tried everything including new DME relays etc.. Just something else to take a look at, as it is pretty easy....

Was the customer's name Terry Rudy?

If so, then you fixed Bokonon's car!

DERRRRRRR.... I didn't even look at the name.. OK, more coffee required. Yes it was Terry's car. The microswitch on the clutch was just out of adjustment. Terry's is not the only one we have seen like this. Checking this switch should be in the standard diagnosis playbook if the car is not starting.

O.K..... Everybody sing On Three..... One.... Two..... Three...... "Its a small world after all....."

Glad to see it was a relatively simple fix.

If the car will not be driven for a while (2-3 weeks or so), what is the best way to keep the battery from going dead other than by disconnecting it altogether. Once in a while, I see products advertised for this purpose but would like to know whether they really work, are reliable, or have any negative side to their usage.

Thanks.

I have a device sold by the Porsche dealer which you plug into the cigarette lighter and it keeps the battery level constant (you of course have to plug the device into an electrical plug in the wall.) Works well. I use it for my Cooper, which I drive infrequently. The 993 is my daily driver.

Heh heh. AWESOME. Just got back into town today and have been dreaming of the 993 for the past week and a half. Glad to hear that the problem was relatively simple. I can't wait to pick her up tomorrow. Woohoo, missing those supercups.

Terry, did you get her started finally since your thread is quite old. I currently have the exact same problem with my car which has a separate immobilizer key. Does yours too?
Thanks for your help.
