Default Bruce Andersons - car values

Just read an article by Bruce in which he shows the current values of 993's. Is it just me - or do his prices always seem a little low? When I look at the market - I cant find a decent 993 S for less than 46k - yet he states that's the high value for one of these cars. I have looked at 4S's for less than 46k - but they have too many miles or issues. I'm assuming Bruce is the authority on this stuff - yes?

i have not read the article in question (can you link to it maybe?), but, in my (limited) experience, cars are never worth what i see in writing (in either direction). i just think that there are too many factors in the car market (for both sellers and buyers) that cannot be encompassed by anyone algorithm or formula...just my 2 cents.

Try owning a 964 and reading Bruce's valuations/assessments. I think he's one reason so many are so disparaging about well-sorted 964s. To be honest, he's revised his judgment somewhat upward on those cars....and I give him full dap for knowing a hell of a lot about 911s in general.

Bruce just gets his info from what readers send him about the purchase or selling prices of their cars. It is extremely unscientific. Just use it as yet another datapoint, but don't camp on it.

I haven't seen the article, either, but an excellent C4S for $46k would be hard to find. It would have to be 70k+ mileage, from what I've seen. A local porsche dealer was selling a '96 C4S for $46 but it had a bad steering shimmy, making me think it had issues.

What does Bruce show for a plain old '96 C2? The market (from my perspective) seems to be $34k - $38k. That's a pretty significant drop during the last year and a half. It doesn't look to me like '96 is selling for any more than '95 or that a C4 is getting much more than C2 (despite how illogical that sounds).

I don't think it's a specific article that's being referenced. Bruce has a section in Excellence magazine monthly in which he covers the market for various Porsche models. I had also noticed that he seemed to low-ball in comparison to advertised prices I see.

Eric, congrats on the sale! When did it finally happen? Do okay on the price? Whats the next purchase? Mine seems to be doing well after the initial repairs...and of course my purchase price throws all values out of the window, so we won't go there unless promted

Thanks Chris, just sold it this week and am expecting the money to be all cleared Wednesday. I took a beating on price due to the recent market decline, but I still sold it for well over a base '96 C4 (due to all the options). The fiancee and I are still debating what to do with the money, but I'm confident that another 993 is in my future.

I have never understood Bruce Anderson's valuations for the 993. I agree, they do seem to be consistently low. This is particularly the case when you look at the asking price of 993's that are in the classifieds section of the same magazine he writes his valuation report. Maybe someone should tell the people that are selling their 993s in Excellence to read his valuation articles - they usually ask $10,000 - $15,000 more than his assessed value for the cars.

Eric and Chris - slight thread hijack - yes, nice Avatar, Eric. I'm partial to my Rickenbacker (or however you spell it), but nothing like a screaming Les Paul. Picked up a really nice used Rivera Fandango (1x12) last year - great amp.

BTW, did you folks know John Paterek is into guitars? Pretty sure he and I discussed them some months back - way over my head, but he seemed to like a good finish!

Sorry, back to cars.

I was just going to give you a big kudos on your avatar, Eric, but othes beat me to it! I've got an 80 Strat, myself, but have always had a soft spot for a real LesPaul. nice!

Thanks guys, glad to hear there are some guitarists here! That's my '57 goldtop reissue and I also play a red US Deluxe strat with flamed maple top. I love both, but the Les Paul is just something magical. Stedge- great taste! I also play thru a Rivera Fandango, although mine is the 2x12 paired with the LosLobottom Sub1 subwoofer.

Sorry for the hijack.

Heh heh ... lefty 80s Fender Strat with DiMarzio Super II pickups, CAE unity gain buffer and Jerry Garcia designed onboard effects loop, through a Fender Vibrolux Reverb with JBL K-110 speakers and a bunch of effects (Q-tron, Tube Screamer, Octave, delay, Crybaby etc.) ... and my near-mint old 79 Vibrolux is for sale on Ebay this very moment. Snap it up for the holidays. Hear my setup at http://www.electrichummus.com/music.html ... but you'd better like the Grateful Dead. Eric, love your amp, almost bought a Rivera Chubster to gig with but needed that real Fender tone for what I'm playing live.

993 content: It all fits in the C4 cab, too. Just barely.

Thought I'd shed a little light on my own Bruce Anderson experience...

I sent him my info for the reader sales report section almost two years ago: 1996 Carrera C2, Tiptronic S . 76k, excellent condition, etc. - $28,500.
He wrote back to me saying that my "C2S" must have been a '97 because they didn't make the C2S in '96.
I wrote back saying it wasn't a '97 C2S, but a '96 C2, Tiptronic S (Which I guess means the Tiptronic has the steering wheel shifters, or something.??).
Sure enough, about six months later I'm perusing the reader sales report and I read about a '97 C2S
Tip w/76k, excellent condition etc., selling for $28,500. ("a very good deal").
This obviously erroneously dented the 993 sale price curve, which I feel Mr. Anderson was all too eager to do. To my eyes he has always seemed a bit annoyed at the high prices being asked (and received) for 993s and always seems relatively gleeful to report any decline in 993 values.

Hope this confuses the issue a little further.
