997
I like the look of the 997. I'll probably skip the 996 line altogether and the next P-Car I'm getting is either the 993 TT or the 997. Hopefully the 997 has an S or 4S model that has an even wider rear fender flares to make it close to the width of a narrow body 993 rear fenders.

Either they bought the car because they liked the design (t really would be interesting to know how many of 996 owners REALLY prefer 996 looks over 993, especially the older 996 models) or they have to defend the car they have.
They should have a poll. who bought the car because it's better, who because it's better looking, and then there are those 80% (total, not 80% of 996 Rennlisters) of 996 owners who just bough it because it's "Poorsch" & it's hip to be seen in a "Poorsch". Say to those that 1973 was a good year and they start to talk about some wines when 'real nut' would have immediately ailly smile in his/hers face and say: "YES! That RS is just awesome!
It's interesting that most (remember, didn't say all!) of the 911, 964, 993 (obviously) owners prefer the looks of 993 over any 911 (ok, maybe after 1973 RS, there's just something magic with that beast), especially 996.
996 owners are the only ones who think 993 is not the best looking (if not the best in any way) 911, and many of them doesn't even know what 1973 RS looks like or what is is...

Well, I'm a former 2002 996C2 owner and a former 1973 911S owner with a 2004 GT3 on order (had to sell them both to afford the GT3). I freely admit that the 993 is a far better looking and better built car than the 996, although I still think my 73S was better in both departments than even a 993. If there were 993RS's made for the US market, I'd be very interested. The truth is that the 996's just perform at a higher level (especially the GT3),so even though there are many aspects of the 993 that I admire, I can't overlook the fact that a GT3 is just going to be more fun to drive (I hope). 993's are unfortunately heavier than 996's with less power. I wish I could afford a 993 as my daily driver to go with the GT3, but my daily driver is an 88 944Turbo S (also my track car). This car is significantly faster than a stock 993 at high altitude where I live (even 3 seconds/lap faster than my 320hp 02C2).
Since the GT3 will be the first RS model (only missing the RS name) ever to be US legal (RSA was diluted), I can't pass it up.
I really want a modern 73RS and the GT3 is the closest thing going, even if it does weigh 1,000 lbs more and has less character. The 8 lbs/hp w/o turbo and 8,200rpm redline are calling to me...

Well to me, the 997 is basically a compromise for both camps who want to "modernize" the 911 line and keep it "traditional" at the same time. Yes it does have a watercooled engine and yes it has the modernized interior, but it also reverts to the classic style the us traditionalists like with the rounded or oval headlights and slightly more pronounced rear fenders. I think they (Porsche) are trying to continue the brisk sales of the car to many new owners who have never owned the car, and get back many of the old owners they may have lost when the 996 came out.

I deal with many of the asian imports like Honda and Toyota. They feel that once you are in their cars, there will be a certain level of loyalty to the brand. Therefore, for them to have continued success, they need to attract people that are new to the brand. The problem for Porsche is that once you get one, you can't really upgrade (like from a Civic to a TL) and plus the cars last so damn long!

I like the look of the new 997. I think it will make me a 996 owner(second porsche, can't replace a 993) in a few years....Cause I think we will be able to buy them at Mustang prices!
um, RE: 996 owners and how they view 997 spy photos:
anyone who pays at a minimum $70k for a car that looks like its little $50k brother and thinks this is okay? if that's the case, then they deserve the horrid resale value of the 996s.
TENC's.
(the emperor's new clothes).

it would have been a far simpler thing to buy a 996, but that it was too close to resembling a 986 was the kicker. couldn't do it.
ps. wagons don't have a big wing, you silly man. only the sedans do.
pps. my STi will have the wing, and i imagine i will have to remove it quite shortly after delivery.
ppps. my STi will be an expensive impreza, but it will be a cheap 996 eater.

Grant,
It's April issue, go and get it!
JPL,
Yes they do. Because of water, there is not as much mechanical 'clatter' and (I don't know why, propably becasue no fan) they doesn't sound as good as air cooled cars, exhaust note is not as good either. Although, last weekend DE, Orbit Racing's GT3R sounded pretty damn awesome!
IMO, 2.7 or better yet maybe 2.2 flat-6 sound at WOT is pretty much as good as it can get!
