I just purchased a Porsche CDR-220 unit from Becker NA to replace the CR-210 that came with the my 96 993.
Here what I can tell you. The rear connectors are a direct match - no re-wiring. I had to remove the DIN mount that was used on the CR-210. The CDR-220 is slighly bigger and wouldn't fit otherwise.

In addition, the faceplate needs to be reprogrammed at Becker so that you can see it from the angle we sit at in the 993. Becker also sells the preamp outs that you may want to purchase.

Deano,
Yes, my CR-210 was AM/FM tape unit. The new CDR-220 is AM/FM with CD. I had Becker NA do the upgrade for viewing angle before they shipped it.
The DIN Mount is a metal frame that is in the dash. After you remove the CR-210 (using the radio removal tools) you will see the DIN Mount. It's only held in by metal tabs (just bend to remove). The CDR-220 is ~2mm bigger so it didn't fit quite right. The dash opening alone and rear support brackets (inside the dash area) are enough to hold the CDR-220 fine.

Deano,
By the way, Becker NA sold me a "B-stock" CDR-220 with upgraded controller for viewing angle, Porsche manual, and removeral tool all for $371.58. Also $20 for 2-day shipping. I believe the "B-stock" means the units have a knick or scratch. My was perfect looking. Becker NA can be reached at 201-327-3434. I think the controller upgrade cost for viewing angle is $50.
