Question O2 Sensor replacement

Can anyone tell me where the O2 sensor is and is it easy to replace as a DIY?

How much is the part?

Thanks

Simple DIY on 95's since we only have 1 sensor. It is the large nut right in the middle of the catalytic converter with a wire coming out of it. The wire leads to a black box on the right side of the engine compartment and is a simple snap type connector (assuming you get an OEM sensor) These are easily over $100 at the dealer but I have seen one recently on Ebay for $60 I was going to buy it just because it's a good deal but I'm not having any problems iwht the CEL or gas mileage so if it ain't broke....

So presumeably I would need to get the car on a lift to do it?

You simply need to jack the rear end up to get under and see what you are doing (eg, put it on jackstands). I replaced mine a couple years ago and it solved a CEL problem and some weird loss of power issues. It's a simple replacement with the most hassle getting the wire routed to the box in the engine compartment (IIRC). The DIY instructions were very clear.

Is replacement of the sensor in a '95 any part of routine maintenance? Or, as jdoc7 said...if it ain't broke......

Any of the aftermarket universal 02 sensors work fine. There are 2 types of connector though so pay attention to get the correct plug. Should be available at any parts house.

Thanks guys.

Evan: apparently you should change it every 50K miles.

Do 993s not suffer the same problem 964s do with aftermarket O2 sensors? (i.e. Porsche waterproofs theirs, aftermarket Bosch doesn't.)

Jason, I don't know but have always used the aftermarket when the factory unit went bad. I have use them in my 996 Cup, my 993 and 964 with no discernible difference but not sure on the waterproofing. They look identical when I stare at them though.(I carry 2 in the trailer for the Cup and one is aftermkt other is universal.)

Its a well documented cause of problems for the 964, people complain of poor running while driving in the rain and it turns out their O2 sensor is an aftermarket Bosch unit. As soon as they replace the unit with a genuine Porsche unit the problems disappear! I realize the O2 sensors are mounted in a slightly different location on the 993 so it might not have the issue, it was just something I was curious about.

jason,
Good info , the only trouble I ran into was I cooked a wire on a header once. My current 964 has the 993 exhaust with a 95 Cat and center mount 02 so maybe I wont have trouble with it....hopefully....

Anyone know the correct bosch O2 sensor part number? I can find the Pelican one, but it doesn't look like the bosch part numbers. Autozone had em cheap, but I don't trust their staff to match the resistance range, depth and threadpitch correctly.

Here's what the Bosch site lists:

Part Number Description

13721 Oxygen Sensor - OE Type Before Catalyst Two required Interval=100000

13723 Oxygen Sensor - OE Type After Catalyst Two required Interval=100000

15738 Oxygen Sensor - Univ Type Before Catalyst Two required Interval=100000

15738 Oxygen Sensor - Univ Type After Catalyst Two required Interval=100000

Thanks!

Also, Bosch lists two different parts for 94 C2...

13924 Oxygen Sensor - OE Type Before Catalyst Interval=60000

15735 Oxygen Sensor - Univ Type Before Catalyst Interval=60000

I thought only had one, which makes me think the 94 part numbers might be right?

What's the CEL problem that the part fixed? I've got a CEL that comes on until the motor gets hot on my 95 and I was wondering if it could be the O2 senor. The car is just under 50K on mileage.

Thanks!

Tried another search and answered my own question...https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...t=bosch+sensor

Interesting, if that thread is right, then the Bosch site is wrong..?
