Post Power Steering

993 cab 94 owner. 70,000 kms.

Sent the car out for the 10K service. Mechanic says that the power steering is leaking. He says the leak cannot be fixed and is recommending a change of the power steering. The parts alone cost $1500/-. I intend to visit the guy tomorrow and check it out for myself.

What and where should I check for leaks?
Can u change bits and pieces are do you have to change the whole steering setup?
What are the parts I need to know about power steerings so that I can ask an intelligent question as to what parts he is changing?
Is it dangerous to drive with a leaking power steering or can I top up the fluid whenever required? Essentially is this is a must do job or can it be postponed?
Any other advice would be appreciated!

BTW I am going in for Pirelli P Zero Rossos. Had mismatched tires and hope now I enjoy the feeling of the Porsche.

Cheers guys.

Hameed,
The only way to know how much your rack is leaking is to remove the front protective cover, 8 or 10 nylock nuts. The rack leaks from one of 2 spots where the pistons move in and out of the rack. The rack can be rebulit but it is not a DYI. In fact to see a DYI, check out www.p-car.com under DYI section. I replaced my own rack with a 964 rack as it was the same rack used on the Euro 993 RS. If you check around, you will find the 964 rack to be about half the price of a 993 rack and it will work just fine. In the states, we can the rack from places like Autozone. A Porsche shop can also order one for you, ask them for the price on both and you will save some money with the 964. Unless you have some tools, a lift and some time I would not recommend this as a easy DYI. The upside on the 964 rack is you steering will be a little quicker as the raito is smaller than our 993 rack. As for how long it can leak, mine was dripping a little for over a year, I did not change the rack as it did not bother me that much, however if you have a puddle under your car, you may want to act a little faster!
Good luck

Question

Thanks for the tips guys.

I put the car on a lift, removed the cover and checked. It is leaking around one of the rubber boots. I could see the oil on the cover when the car was up on the hoist. It was not dripping but the boot seemed to be drenched with oil.

Is there a power steering service kit available (containing all the washers and bushes) for the 993, which would prevent the leak. I checked on Pelican parts and couldnt find one. Even if one is available can you service the 993 rack and just change the bushes and washers and retain my existing rack and pinion. Or are these racks designed such that you have to change the complete set.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers

Hameed,

Sounds like you are suffering from a common 993 steering leaking problem. Looks like your rack is leaking from the same place my rack was leaking from. See picture.

The 993 steering rack can only be rebuild by a professional steering rack rebuilder with the proper tool and pressure testing equipment definitely not a DIY with the repair kit. When my steering rack failed I went out on a search for a service kit, but had no luck. Labor quote to rebuild the rack was more than a replacement rebuilt rack, so I purchased my replacement rack from Autozone.

The only way to repair the steering rack is to remove it from the car, so it would cheaper if you just replace the entire unit while you are at it.

Hameed,

When Robin says it's not DIY, I'd certainly believe him (just in case you don't know who he is. He's the other half of the company called "B&R DIY" , it's located in Gotham City but he has a great web site where you find plenty of P-Car stuff).

But anyway, check this steering rack repair kit at eBay if you still want to try.
