I had the windshield replaced a few weeks back. The entire cost came out of my pocket as I had $1,000 deductible and the cost of the windshield, what else, $1,000!
What I have noticed, with the new windshield installed, the windshield squeek has gone away, hmmm.

Martin, it's probably due to the fact that new seals were installed with the windshield. I too am going to be replacing mine some time soon, and really hate that these damn things are so expensive!

About 4 years ago I paid $1100 installed incl tax for an OEM part. My deductible was $1K also. I think the "cord fix" must be part of the parts list when the installer orders the OEM , as my squeak also went away.

As a result of a collision w/a golf ball size rock, I too am in the process of a windshield replacement. I was quoted about $1000 from my P dealer. Following positive recs from a few R-listers (check the archives), I called Safelite - a national operation. Their installed price is about $400. At first I was scheduled for a mobile install at my home. Then I was told, "due to the complexity, we'll only do it in our shop by our tech w/911 experience." Encouraging. I'll post the results.

You guys are lucky... the windshield I need to replace on the Vette is $2800 (because of the Heads Up Display)...
and all thanks to a nice Porsche 996 at VIR who I decided to try to follow down the back straight... he kicked up 2 nice sized rocks from his R-compounds and I still have the scars from my run-in w/ the Porsche

Speaking of windshields, Pedro and his Ice Wax just visited my 97. No more squeaking.
Regarding the windshield, I called my insurance co. when I replaced the window on my cab. $650 installed. They came to my house. I believe it was Safelite.
To Eric Wong & liteswap: It is nice to see you as a sponsor. Thank you.
